I have Windows 2000 and Windows media player 9. It will rip a CD to .wma
but not .mp3. Does anyone know why this is? Are there any free encoders
from Microsoft that adds .mp3 support. It will play mp3 just fine but not
rip. Thanks.

Windows media player 10 allows mp3 ripping. You have to configure it.

I've only just seen this posting, so the question may already have
been answered.

Windows Media Player certainly does rip to mp3 files (well 9 and 10 do
at least). Go to the menu Tools>Options and select the Rip Music tab,
and then unjder Rip Settings select Mp3 from the Format drop down menu

John.

Install Media Player 10 - this supports mp3 ripping. I think MS
didn't support mp3 ripping in earlier versions because they were
pushing .wma. I guess they now figure that:

a) most 'mp3 players' also not support wma files
b) they view wma as superior in quality to mp3 (which I believe it is)

and hence believe that most users will use .wma ripping rather than
mp3 (which of course is the default when you install MP10).
