I have a JVC semi-automatic turntable with a Stanton 681EEE cartridge.
All the connections seem fine, but I can't get sound from it. If I
turn up the volume very high, something comes through, but for only an
instant.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this and what I can do to
correct? Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried cleaning the needle ?

Have you checked and double-checked the cables? Do you have another set of
cables that you could try ?

Have you tried another input device into the same inputs of your amp (or
receiver) to make sure that the amp or receiver is ok ?

My very first step would be to try to eliminate either the amp (receiver)
OR the turntable as the real source of the problem.

Good Luck !!

Some possible reasons:

- You plugged it into a line level, rather than phono input. But
normally you'd hear steady, but low volume, tinny sound in that
instance.

- The connections within the TT are corroded or poor. This seems
unlikely given what you said, but I suppose it's possible.

- The amp is bad, so try a different one to see if it's the amp or TT.

Thanks for the replies. The preamp (Sony ES) is working fine (for
other input devices) and I have the turntable plugged into the phono
jacks. I guess I'll have to unpack my AR table and see if it works.
All the connections that I can see look fine. If the AR table works
ok, then I'll take the JVC apart and look around. Not much to lose
doing that.
