Hooray, my DVD writer arrived today!

My computer only has 2 bays, so which of my other drives should I keep?

- my 16x DVD-ROM, so I can rip faster? According to
http://tinyurl.com/54xrg, "If you are using a DVD burner to rip the
DVD, don’t expect a rip speed much more than about 2.0x to 2.5x. If you
are using a DVD-Rom to rip the DVD, you can expect a much faster
ripping speed, upto the maximum speed of the DVD-Rom." Is this correct?

- or my 52x Lite-On CD burner, so that I can burn CDs faster and be
sure of their reliability? CDs are still the more common media that I
will be burning. And although cdfreaks.com tested the pioneer 108 as a
2-sheep cd burner, they did find some problems with
reliability/compatibility (http://tinyurl.com/6oor9). I have to be able
to back up my safedisc protected software.

Opinions?

me too. im buying new case this winter, but til then...i only have 2 bays
which contained 16x dvdrom and 48x burner, when my dvdrw came i actually
ebayed my dvdrom, i use dvdrw for everything dvd related, and i kept cdrw
just cuz its faster, dvdrw only burns cds at 24x (i think!). i burn a lot of
dvds but I still burn WAY more cds and doing it in under 2 min is more
important to me than ripping a dvd faster with a dvdrom drive!
Just my 2 cents, hope it helps!

Thanks! I decided to keep the DVD -ROM for now. My DVD writer is
supposed to burn at 32x, and my 52x CD burner never gets above 32x
anyway - but I kept it around in case I change my mind. I'm not sure
how often I will really be ripping DVDs.

I've got four bays on my PC. One has a Pioneer 108 (16x DVD burning), one
has a Philips CD-RW (52x CD read/write), one has a LG 4120B (DVD-RAM writing
support), and one has a LG DVD-ROM (for 16x DVD reading/ripping). I added an
additional IDE controller card, so each drive is on a separate IDE channel
to the HD! I've got no read/write speed issues :-) It's a shame there
aren't any drives that support all formats at the highest possible speed!
