Is a DVD palyer worth repairing? |
|
|
I have a Sony 'DVP-C670D' 5 disc DVD Player. Its about 3 years old.
Recently while playing rented DVDs it will freeze with bright green
pixelation all over the screen. After this happens it will jump all over the
place, eg. 1hr 10min into the movie may jump back to 55mins. Even after
removing the disc and cleaning it it still does it. It does it to most
rented DVDs now.
I've even tried playing the same rented DVD on another machine, and it works
fine through the bad parts on my player.
Does this sound like a repairable problem? Has anyone got any opinions on
what might be the problem?

I also got problem on my panasonic player. I believe it was caused by
rental DVD also. The rental DVD I played has a label ring around the
hole. It was off center slightly. I bet it is causing a lot of
shaking at high rpm which resulted in tracking problems and put extra
stress on the spindle motor.

my nickel says the cost of repair exceeds the cost of a pretty good new one,
assuming you can find someone to repair it |

I got a H07 (broken spindle motor) on a panasonic DVD-CP72S 5 disc
changer. The part costs $57.95 and the labor costs $65. The repair
adds up to $127.58 including tax for the part.
The equivalent replacement of a new Panasonic DVDF87S only costs $116
at onecall.com plus some extra new features.
The problem is that the shop took $45 non-refundable evaluation fee
from me. The fee can be credited toward the repair. Now with the $45
sunken cost. I need to add $82 to have it repaired. Or forget the
$45 and buy a new one. That is easy to decide if I had not already
spent $45. Darn!
Whether to repair or not depends on the features and quality of your
machine. How much it costs to buy an equivalent model today. In my
case, the new model is cheaper and has more features, though I don't
know about picture quality. My old model cost double when I bought it
two years ago. But hardware price dropped so fast that these machines
are disposable. If they break, buy a new one.

Yup, and even if you get it fixed you only have a fixed player. Either you
buy one of those shitty extended warrantees when you buy new stuff, or you
don't and eat the repairs that you need which may be cheaper.
Decisions, decisions.
