WMV -> Divx? |
|
|
Hi folks,
I've got a huge WMV file that I want to
convert to a smaller and hopefully equal
quality Divx. Can someone suggest a good
tool for doing this? I checked vobdub
but that doesn't appear to read WMV.
Thanks.

In linyx mplayer can read wmv. |
So I sort of suspect mencoder can recode it to DivX, but have not tried.
This is from man mplayer:
mencoder (MPlayer's Movie Encoder) is a simple movie en-
coder, designed to encode MPlayer-playable movies (see
above) to other MPlayer-playable formats (see below). It
encodes to DivX4, XviD, one of the libavcodec codecs and
PCM/:MP3/:VBRMP3 audio in 1, 2 or 3 passes. Furthermore
it has stream copying abilities, a powerful plugin system
(crop, expand, flip, postprocess, rotate, scale, noise,
rgb/:yuv conversion) and more.
So, if it plays wmv (and it does), it should be able to encode that
to DivX. |

But be warned that the DivX will not be of equal quality. The rule with
lossy encoders like WMV, DivX, MPEG2, etc. is that you will always get
at least a slight degradation in quality every time you re-encode.

Agreed. |

Well, the wmv need not be so bad as to be called 'garbage'. |
I am pretty sure if you start with high quality wmv, you can acceptable results.
I get very good results from mpeg2 to DivX.
mpeg2 is also a 'lossy' compression.
But of cause many wmv files will alraeady be highly compressed as they were
intended for distribution over the net (low bandwidth network).
The other thing is how good is one at tweaking parameters?
I am not even 100% conversant with all DivX params, forget about wmv...
Would take some experimentation. |

You might could try Dr. Divx.
