I have a good fast laptop which used to be able to play XVID files
through BSPLAYER with good performance. I know the files are good
because the play perfectly on a much less capable and slower desktop
PC.

Something has now happened and now the playback of any XVID files is
jerky; the motion seems like its playing at 10 - 20 frames per second.

Where do I begin to troubleshoot this problem on the laptop?

Is this a most likely to be a CODEC problem?

I have tried to remove codecs using control panel but they seem to
miraculously reinstall themselves on laptop reset.

How can I remove codecs completely?

i'm guessing you've installed some jumbo codec pack that also installs
unncecessary picture filters designed to 'improve' the picture that also
slow the whole lot down.

if so the pack should allow un-installation.
then just install the codecs on their own, one by one as required.

you could also use vlcplayer - http://www.videolan.org/vlc which doesnt
need the codecs.

I think I did install the Nero Codec Pack and I have since heard that
this can cause problems.

Looking at the number of codecs in the system it seems overwhelming
and unnecessary. There must be hundred's!

Is there a simple tool to analyse the installed codecs and allow total
removal and erasure of unwanted codecs?
