I've got a film on 'VCD' Video Compact Disc - MPEG-1, but can't find a way
of playing it.
I have a Wharfedale 750 DVD player (multi-region but the disc reads "no
region
coding") which won't show any menus from the disc nor play anything.

I have also tried an iMac OSX 10.2, and although the machine recognises the
disc and its files, I can't find anything which will play it. I have tried
iMovie and RealOne Player.

What software do I need?

Any help TIA

Every normal stand alone DVD-player should be able to play VCD discs with no
problems whatsoever, especially if we are talking about standard VCD format.

Not true. Some will, some won't.

Chinese players tend to have the ability programmed in.

Those from many Japanese companies no longer support it .. if they ever
did.

I don't know anything about your player, but its disability of playing VCDs
means that the VCD discs aren't burned in standard format (although most of
better players should handle this as well) or your player is simply a very,
very low-end model.

I don't have Mac computer so I can't tell for sure, but the programs that
you mentioned could still be able to play VCD.
Open your VCD folder and locate the folder called 'MPEGAV'. There you can
usually find a certain amount of .DAT files. If you have original movie
VCDs, there should be two files in that folder - called 'avseq01.dat' and
'avseq02.dat'. One of them is usually some kind of primitive
menu/navigation-file (mainly used by stationary DVD or old VCD players),
while the big one is the movie itself. Try to open that file with the
programs.

If it doesn't work, then you should look for a software based DVD-player
(you don't have to have a DVD-ROM in your computer to be able to use it). I
don't know which DVD-player programs are avaiable for Mac, but to make sure
that you know what kind of programs I'm talking about, I can give you few
Windows-version, only to give you the right track - WinDVD, PowerDVD, Ulead
DVD player...etc. If this alternative fails as well, then it's most likely
the VCD discs fault.

Some DVD players will play VCD's, others won't. If it won't play with
the Play key, try pressing the "1" key on the remote to start the first
track. Sometimes this works.

Download VLC and have it play the biggest file on the disk. 10.2 might
have trouble with the VCD layout, though. IIRC, it had some problem
accessing the 2nd track on which the mpeg data lies. The directory info
is on the 1st track.

Those from many Japanese companies no longer support it .. if they ever
did.

What?
Every, and I mean every single normal and more recent player (at least brand
names) will play VCD.

I have commercially released, pressed silver VCD's that will not play on the
Toshiba, Aiwa, and Samsung units that various family members own. They
produce messages like "invalid disc" or "disc error". They play fine on my
Apex, Sony, and Panasonic players.

Thanks for this reply.
Since posting I have looked at AppleHelp and it appears that OSX10.2.8 does
not work with VCDs -- you have to have 10.3 which is a pain since it costs
at present. I'll try what you suggest.

Thanks for the help.
I have downloaded 'VLC' and it works just fine. A good piece of software and
very useful!
