Re: Sony Combo |

It is unopened and I wanted to get a little advice.
I just don't like the idea of combo devices, but will keep it if it is not
a bad model.
The only thing I know about is that I want it to play DVD recordables and
for it to have progressive scan. The Sony seems to play just about all
types.
Is there another model I should look for?
Still not a fan of combos, but maybe they have gotten better.
Thanks!

Take a look at some of the user comments for that model at

Re: No Firewire output to DVD recorder |

| Quote: | Sorry if this is wrong NG, but I think someone here can answer this
question. I have a Sony mini-DV camcorder. It has a 4-pin jack for DV
output. I send DV from camcorder to my laptop which attached to my Firewire
card with a 6-pin cable.
I then edit the incoming DV on laptop. Then I remove cable from camcorder
and place the 4-pin end of cable into my DVD recorder. My recorder doesn't
see any signal from laptop.
MY QUESTION:
How can I check my laptop and Firewire card to see that the .AVI files are
being sent from my laptop to the Firewire card and cable?
TIA
|
You should be able to send the firewire signal from your lap top to
your video camera. Your video camera should show a picture on the
screen if your laptop is sending a video signal. You'll need to change
the settings on your video camera first. Most editing programs allow
for sending a video signal through the firewire to a video camera.

Just unloaded my DV-09 in favor of the new Sony DVP-S9000ES and the Sony
outperforms the Pioneer in every way--
12 bit video processing, stunning picture and SACD playback a nice
bonus--And being progressive scan where the 09 is not, the Pioneer just
can't even 'hope' to compete w/ this new Sony--
Pioneer's DV-09 is way overpriced, only a 2yr warranty compared to FIVE
on the Sony
and overall, is technically obsolete--
I purchased my 9000ES through a Sony employee for $825 plus tax but Oade
Bros., offers a very good price on the 'net--
For those that own the DV-09, dump it before you get next to nothing for
it and go with the Sony DVP-S9000ES--It's got to be the best value on
the market right now for all of its features--

But is the Sony newer than the Pioneer. Will the next Pioneer DVD
player beat the latest Sony DVD player. With companies competing
against each other products get better all the time.

Sorry to cross post this, but I've been away from this for awhile
and am not sure where to go with this question.
I have a 3 year old SONY DVP-S7000 DVD player. It used to be the
reference unit, and some still think its the best (non-progressive
scan) unit.
A lot of the older DVD's I had bought play fine on it except for one
common problem to both old and newer DVD's. One in awhile I hear a
pop, and the sound goes away for a moment. I had thought that
perhaps I was getting a power spike somewhere (old apartment and
wiring, but I DO have a good surge suppressor), causing my Onkyo 939
to reset. But on a S7000 FAQ website, I see there MIGHT be some
problems with a chip. Anyone else have this problem?
Next, and the most troublesome - on quite a few of the latest
released DVD's, the movie seems to lockup, the player seems to go
into a search mode, and then the movie will skip a number of scenes
and start to play again. I have rewound the movie, and many times it
will STILL do the same thing in the same spot. And there have even
been times that the movie will shut off completely. I have cleaned
the tray to make sure there is nothing sticky on it, and looking
inside with a flashlight and it seems free of dust. Has anyone else
encountered this too? I seem to remember that on CD's, and specially
CDR's, they are not "cut" as good and are hard to read or as very
slow to access. Is it possible that now DVD's have caught on in a
big way, that the now mass production of DVD's are making them
cheaper and not recorded as good? Or could it be the new layering
style???
*** as a sidenote, the movie Bicentennial Man skipped in the SAME
spot on my GF's Pioneer 535 unit the other night, as it did on my
S7000. That sort of makes me wonder if it IS the new style of DVD's.
I had a similar problem on a Sony 735D DVD player. I noticed that the
trouble started when reading from the second layer of the DVD.
Some on this newsgroup have said that the laser is wearing out.
|
I work with a lot of equipment that uses lasers, and I have never had to
replace the laser itself, just the power supply.
| Quote: | I also thought that the cleaning DVD might have caused some damage.
Do you play hired DVD's or play new DVD's? I was thinking that hired
DVD's might have some marks on the surface of the DVD causing
problems. The newer DVD players have error correction build into them
to prevent problems.
It might also be happening on DVD's that are highly compressed to be
able to fit a lot on the DVD.
If you are able to find out what DVD's that skip have in common then
you might have a better idea of what the problem is.

Yeah, that would be hilarious!
But the guy is obviously an early adopter of the DVD format, having had
a player in 1997 (I didn't get MY first player until 2000). I'm sure
he moved on to another player very quickly if his S7000 went kaput.

There's also the option of getting one of those small Windows Media
computers to use primarily as a DVD player - the advantage being that it can
play anything you can install a codec for. |
