Interestingly the Beeb have also announced a move to completely tape-free
production wherever possble by the same date. (The aim is to use tape only
for archival and acquisition - where needed). Already a number of London
post-production houses - who make decent money for tape transfers - are
concerned that a revenue stream may be reduced - as they don't expect that
the BBC (and other broadcasters who will no doubt follow suit) will pay for
file-transfers in the same way.
For information the BBC currently have HD post-production gear in both their
London and Bristol production centres, and also have just re-furbished a
medium-sized (suitable for London street parking) Outside Broadcast truck
for HD production. The Beeb have produced a number of prestige shows in HD
for a few years using facilities from Alfacam - the company behind
Euro1080/HD1 - but can now do much of this using in-house gear. Most
high-end documentary (especially natural history - which is based in
Bristol) is using HD, as is the weekly music show "Later..." - in this case
using the HD OB truck parked next to the TV Centre studio used.
I believe the BBCs recent purchase of standard definition Sony BVP E30
cameras to replace some of the Thomson 1657s at TV Centre may well be the
last major SD camera purchase the Beeb make...
