By last count I have about 164 hours of audio and 74 hours of video on my
system. I have been creating storage through CDr's and CDr/w's. But
some of my older CD's (over 4 years) seem to have a problem with my new
computer. Luckily I discovered this before I gave the old p3 to my
Grandson and pulled the CD-RW out and put it into the p4 so I could get
the Data out and burn new CD's with the new burner - still I did
experience some data loss, but not significant.

The main reason for getting the p4 was to handle video data - most being
analog from my SONY Handycam - but significant from other sources (almost
all analog). So I put together a system dedicated to analog pretty much,
being a partial carryover from the p3.

I hava a Scan Converter running the video into my Toshiba 4-head VCR with
Stereo placing the pc-audio out line in to the VCR so it can capture the
audio.

With the data loss I suffered from the CD's it made me think about using
the VCR as a tape back-up. Sure the crispness on video not the same, but
it is better to have some video than no video (and on TV it does not look
like any loss at all). Audio of course sounds great - and I personally
cannot tell the difference.

I am certain there must be some audio loss, but my ear cannot discern it.
Is there someplace that I could see numbers related to the potential
loss? Of course capturing in real-time I use lossless audio formats
where available such as WAV as the VHS tape records in Hours not Data.

The Toshiba has a Fast Seek feature so I can reach a spot on the Tape in
a few minutes - but of course not same as a HD, but still I think great
for back-up. I know the pitfalls about using VHS for Video (but again,
some version is better than no version), would like comments and/or
pointer to URL's indicating about VHS for music backup (which I think
would be like using a Tape Recorder for backup).

Holler at me if you are bored - or could just let me know something
someway or another.

Thanks.

Bill

VHS and Beta HiFi, by virtue of the high tape to head speed generated
by the rotating heads, is awfully goddamned flat. In fact, I'd hazard
to say it's the highest quality analog recording medium accessible to
consumers short of something like 30ips reel to reel tape.

So in a word, video is by far the biggest concern in terms of loss
here. The audio should pretty darned pristine, esp at SP speeds.

Except for little things like switching noise and dropouts, which are pretty
common with both VHS Hi-Fi and Beta Hi-Fi.

I must be lucky to have a pair of pretty solid Sony machines then, as
I haven't noticed either. Switching noise perhaps on EP mode on the
VHS deck, but never on SP mode. Can't recall ever hearing a dropout.
I used to a lot of recording of audio only with these things back
before good quality multitrack decks were available for reasonable
money. Boy I don't miss that layering method of recording a demo
tape for a band that's for damned sure! :-)

How about getting a DVD burner? Dump everything off in raw audio or
video formats so there are no conflicting problems in the future.
