I had an older Mitsubishi VCR (4 head, Hi-Fi) for some 10-11 years, and it's
worked pretty well, as long as I ran a tape cleaner through it once a month
or so, but lately, it's started chewing up tapes, and, after all that time,
rather than try to have it repaired, I thought I'd just get a new VCR; I'd
gotten my money's worth.

Since the Mitsubishi had been very good, I thought I'd get another one, and
I got a HD-U449, which seemed to be about the same quality that I'd had
before, for $79.

But I'm finding a few annoying things.

First off is, from stop mode, it actually rewinds or fast forwards TOO fast.
I'm sure this was seen as an improvement, but when I tape stuff off TV, I'm
often going forward an hour or back an hour, and this one counts so fast
that you overshoot the point you're aiming for by 10 minutes or so, it's too
difficult to stop it where you want it, and then you have to do those 10
minutes at the slower play Fast Forward rate, so whatever time was saved in
the super-fast forwarding is lost.

More annoying though is this: if you've played something you taped, and
stop it, and then restart it a few minutes later, it works, well and good.
but if you stop it and don't play it again fairly soon, after, oh, 15
minutes or so, it makes a noise... I assume it's the heads retracting or
something. But the problem is, after you hear that noise, if you then
push PLAY, all you get is static snow on the screen. If you take the tape
out, and put it back in, it plays, but there's some damage to the tape at
that point where you tried to play it from now on.

Anyone else experienced this last thing?
