Hello

I have a DVD drive installed on my PC, and wonder what to do to enabling it
for playing DVD movies? I have tried to use Windows Media Player, but no
success. I looks like that I am missing a DVD decoder.

Question: Is there a good DVD decoder (without spam) to install that will
enable my DVD player for use with Windows Media Player (WinXP SP2)

Thanks
Harald

You can buy either WinDVD or PowerDVD, you can try media player classic, or

Yeah, but so it Microsoft. Which is the lesser of the two evils? RealPlayer, by
a hair. Actually to tell the truth, I hate Real, their products and their
privacy policies. Even though you have to sign in to install the new RealPlayer,
it's so much nicer than the Windows Media Player. I prefer the inteface, and
even plays WindowsMedia stuff very well, if not better. Besides, to play DVD's
with WMP, you need third party codecs that cost.

Most always when you purchase a DVD drive, it comes with DVD decoder
software. If a PC is sold with a DVD drive installed it also usually comes
with software. Where did you get the drive? Look there for software.

That's the thing I like about the free open source media player classic
software - you don't even need to "install" it, just run the exe file from
anywhere to play your dvd's.

I've had issues with MediaPlayer Classic. It complains when opening certain
files, even though the appropriate codec is installed and working under any
other player. It then will take you to a useless webpage. Deleted.

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for
various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg,
....) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be
used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a
high-bandwidth network.

And it is free :-)
