Issue with pict quality encoding from DVD |
|
|
Hi,
I read about encoding to MPEG4 in a magazine yesterday and wanted to give it
a try. According to the magazine the sixe of the file would be much smaller
but the picture quality would be the same, WOW! Anyway, I downloaded a trial
version of #1 DVD Ripper from DVDtoX.com. I installed the SW, the DivX 412
CODEC and the ASPI driver. I used the default settings for AVI and created
my first AVI file. I then used MS Media Player 10 to watch my movie chapter.
The quality was not the same. The picture looked OK but you could see
squares in many places (pixelation?). Anyway, any ideas? Is it my encoding
settings? Is it my player? I'm watching the file on my PC.
Thanks,
Francis

You could buy Dr. Divx at www.divx.com but remember its NEAR dvd quality and
not the equal by any means.

I've never used the conversion product you've mentioned, but
many things are true, regardless of the program driving the
conversion.
1) The codec used - many here use Divx but xvid is as, perhaps
even more, popular. BTW, the Divx version I'm using is 5.2
2) The bit rate chosen (my personal preference for high quality
source is about 1.3 mbps video and .192 mbps audio) and knowing
when to vary it.
3) The number of passes used to make the conversion - one pass
works, but loses the precognitive value of second and subsequent
passes. Two would be recommended.
4) Other filters applied during conversion.
With a decent codec, most conversion programs will do an
excellent job of matching the original quality, if they permit
the settings of parameters required to achieve that goal.
7 hours of a/v per DVD5 is quite a nice compression rate without
having sacrificed much quality. (That's 3-5 movies or 10
commercial trimmed, one hour TV shows)
Software which I have been using to create Divx/Xvid AVI files
are: FlaskMPEG for DVD & VDub-MPEG2 for MPEG-ISO, AC3 decoder
for preservation of AC3 sound tracks, and AVI-Mux-GUI to
reassemble AC3 into AVI files.

I paid for the divx codec and then saw the ad for DR Divx trial version
so I installed it then changed my mind and uninstalled DR Divx.
The crappy programers then with their DR DivX uninstall also removed
my divx codec . bastards

If you wrote down your activation code for the divx codec, you should be
able to re-install for no charge.
