Best software for DVD screen capture. |
|
|
Anyone got any advice on which software gives the best quality still pictures
from a DVD. I currently have PowerDVD but the captured image is of a poorer
quality (fairly pixelated with jaggy edges) than the image that the DVD gives
when paused. I presume there must be some kind of anti-aliasing that DVD
players use to smooth out the image, so why doesn't it use it when capturing?

Windvd does a good job but like all others if the subject is moving ,
none of them do a good on frame captures that i know of. If it is a
still shot it does good..Stan

If the aim of the game is producing stills from DVD, then one application
that does a fair job is Nero VisionExpress 3, though you have to copy the
VOB file containing the image to hard drive - but if the need is great, this
is a small concession. To give you some idea of the image quality, see
http://www.gmayor.com/images/NVE00006.jpg which is a still taken from Harry
Potter & The Philosopher's Stone.

I've never experienced the effects you are talking about unless I was
viewing the screen cap at a different resolution or zoom than native. Make
sure the image is set to 100% size on your viewing app, and is being shown
at its native resolution. |

Many thanks for the replies. I don't know why the captured image with PowerDVD
is so inferior to the image it presents when paused during normal play. Could
it be the version I have? I notice that the only saving mode is .bmp - perhaps
there are better versions that allow you to save as .tif or .jpg? |

Graham.
That capture is really excellent. I shall look into getting a copy
of Nero. Thanks for the tip. |

It is probably due to interlacing which effectively gives you only half the
image. Interestingly my captures from PowerDVD are compressed in width by
half but when corrected in Photoshop to double the width of the image, the
resolution is as good as that of the image I posted earlier.
Another possibility would be to use a Screen Capture utility. SnagIt is more
flexible than the capture from PowerDVD and *much* cheaper than Photoshop.

I've tried using Snagit, but only get a black rectangle. I've always assumed
this was because of the piracy protection on the disc - or am I just doing it
wrong?
When you correct with Photoshop, do you just go to 'image size' and just double
the pixels?

SnagIt works well but watch the image format. Some will give a black
rectangle, but without going back to check I can't remember which.
In Photoshop, double the image width as you suggested.

Nero ShowTime (also part of Nero 6 Ultra Edition) has a screen capture
feature. It saves in .bmp format. It doesn't require saving the file
to the hard drive; it can read from a DVD or from a hard drive file.
I'll be interested to see if the NeroVision Express 3 captured image
quality is better. |
