Ripping speed |
|
|
My son and I use identical ripping software (SmartRipper, SuperDVD
Ripper). He has a Pentium 800 MHZ with 256M RAM and I have a Pentium
2GHZ with 521M RAM. He regularly gets rip speeds of 2-4X. I NEVER get
better than 1X. No matter what ripping software I use I seem to be
limited to 1X (as seen on the indicator whilst the software is running).
So my rips take an unbelievably long time in comparison to his. Is there
some setting that could cause this?

Do you both have different DVD-RW drives? If so, you might want to install
the latest firmware for your drive.

You didnt list the most important factor, what drives each of you is
using...
IF the drives and your OS's are identical, then your machine probably needs
to have DMA enabled for the drive. |

We both have identical ripping drives (Pioneer DVD R/RW 108). However he |
has upgraded the firmware to his, but I haven't yet. But would upgrading
the firmware increase the ripping speed. By this I mean ripping FROM the
drive to the HD, not ripping TO the DVD-R. I have two DVD drives, the
other drive is a Sony DVD and if I rip from that I am still limited to 1X.
Thanks, Pete |

I have upgraded the firmware on my Pioneer drive, still no speed ripping!! |
Could it have anything to do with the PIO or DMA settings on the IDE
Channels. Both devices on each of my primary and secondary IDE channels
are set to "DMA if available" and "current transfer mode PIO". And how
can I tell which IDE channel hosts my DVD drives without pulling the
case off the PC. I have two identical HD's, a Sony DVD-ROM and a Pioneer
DVD-R/RW.

PIO is the problem. I had a similar problem on my computer. I had to go
into setup and tell the computer that there was a cd/dvd drive installed.
That's the first thing I'd check. Then if it still says PIO, try deleting
the IDE controller, and when you restart Windows it will find it again.

You say "go into setup"? Which setup? Do you mean BIOS? If so what do I
change in the BIOS? Do I have to change both the Sony (DVD-ROM) and the
Pioneer (DVD-R/RW) in BIOS somehow? Both drives rip at only 1X speed.

You probably need the hacked firmware.
http://gradius.rpc1.org/
And the DVDs should be on one cable and the HDs on the other. |

You need to identify what the 'integrated peripheral' is and correct the
fault with it. If the writer is connected to the PC's IDE bus then the link
I posted will demonstrate how to reset the DMA access.

I've been to your URL and identified these keys in my registry. For both
the primary and secondary IDE (0001,0002) there is a
"MasterIDDataCheckSum" entry. I have a DVD drive attached as slave to
each of these IDEs (and each has no DMA available). The fix you detail
is for Windows 2000. My OS is XP SP2. Will deleting both these lines be
safe on my system.
Should I put both DVD drives on the same IDE as suggested by Baz (this
might slow my DVD to DVD copy?)
