Standalone - USB Adapter Help |
|
|
I am using the Linksys WUSB12 to get guide info, but recently moved my TiVo
to another part of the house. It is now located a little too far for a good
signal from the router.
Does anyone know a way to boost the router signal so that I can continue to
get guide info from the internet?

I presume that's a wireless connection you're using.

There are a couple of options: a directional antenna (probably on
the router - I think I saw these for about $30-$40 at Fry's), better
antenna placement (a couple feet down from the ceiling?), a wireless
802.11b repeater (probably costs about as much as the wireless
router, though), or just move the router antenna (or the whole
router) closer to the TiVo (which probably requires longer Ethernet
cables and may be inconvenient to route).

The WUSB12 is a dongle style adapter, isn't it? Just sticks out of
the back of the unit?
A USB extension cable might allow you to position the adapter better.

Move the base station or put different attennae on it. Some base stations
allow changing the antennae on them. Also consider the base station itself
may not have the best signal strength (they do vary). Or use a USB cable on
the Tivo and move the WUSB12 adapter closer to the base station. You could,
conceivable, also run a wired ethernet connector to another base station
closer or use a bridging wireless adapter.
Wireless isn't perfect. There are plenty of house construction materials
and other factors that will degrade the signal (try being in an old house).
There's also the balance to be struck between making it work by running
actual wired ethernet and endlessly fiddling with the wireless signals. The
first one is known to work quite reliably but at the cost and effort of
running the cabling. It's often not all that hard or expensive to run it.

Add a usb cable to get the dongle away from the back of the set.
Put a flat sheet reflector 9" square, maybe aluminum foil on cardboard, one
inch behind the dongle to help reflect signal toward the access point.
Add a free reflector to the access point.
http://www.freeantennas.com EZ-10 takes 10 minutes to make.

Yes it is.

This is exactly what I did and was able to get enough of a signal to d/l the
program info.
