I've noticed that neither of my Tivos ever calls when they're scheduled to.
Most of the time they are only 5-20 minutes late. If it has more than 24
hours to prepare for a scheduled call that it scheduled itself why can't it
do it on time? but that's not the real issue I want to bring up. Sometimes
they'll call, download and all that good stuff then the next call is
scheduled for about 26 - 30 hours later as usual. But then when that time
comes around it doesn't call and the next scheduled call is now scheduled
for 6 - 24 hours later yet. Why would it not call when scheduled? These
aren't failed calls being rescheduled, they are not being attempted at all
and then being rescheduled. What's the point?

1. It "starts a call" by doing some initial file management and other
internal maintenance. Then it dials the phone when needed.

2. A scheduled call may not be completed for any number of reasons - the
phone line was in use, the dialed number was busy, their server didn't
connect, etc.

3. The actual call time is designed to vary, so their system isn't
overloaded by thousands of Tivos connecting at the same time every day.

4. Why does it matter? The daily call is a background function that doesn't
affect operation and doesn't require any effort on your part. Tivo provide
the last/next times as reference, if you need to verify that normal
connections are taking place (if the last good call was three weeks ago, you
know there's a serious problem).

A TiVo won't make a phone call during prime time viewing hours, although
the system information may show it scheduled during those hours.
When the scheduled time arrives the call time is delayed a few hours
to put the call outside prime time viewing hours.

I suspect the 5-20 minute delay on a scheduled call is due to the TiVo
software not checking every minute to determine if a call is to be made.

You may ignore the timing of the calls and the TiVo will continue
to make the calls. You will see on-screen messages if there are
problems with phone calls.

BTW, the DirecTV DVR TiVo service calls are 8 days apart.

Couldn't say about the phone call but I've seen my SA Tivo connect via
ethernet a few times during primetime. It slows the system down enough
to be noticable navigating the menus. In a couple of days it's migrated
back to normal time.

Does your TiVo have active HMO?

first - unattempted phone calls are not incompleted phone calls. I asked
nothing that related to incompleted calls.

I didn't say it did.

I wondered something about my Tivo's functions and get a lecture on why it
doesn't matter.
Thank God we're not all as apathetic as you.

This must be yet another difference between a DirecTV DVR and a standalone TiVo.

The DirecTV DVR won't make a phone call during prime time. A call can be
manually done anytime, but a scheduled call will be re-scheduled after prime time.

Yes, but these primetime connections were more than just HMO checking

in--status showed the normal progress and the percent complete message.
And every time I've seen it it took several minutes to complete. But
like I said it's only occasionally and in a couple of days has moved
back to wee morning hours--so it's not a "normal" thing. If it was tied
to the HMO checkin seems like it would happen more often.

I keep seeing this stated as universal fact, and it's not. I'm running
3.1.0c2 on two SAT-T60s, and each still faithfully calls in every 48 to
52 hours.

Perhaps your household is included in the 20,000 TiVo HH sample.
