Help! Bizarre problem viewing AVI files encoded with Xvid |
|
|
Here's the scenario: I've downloaded a number of AVI files from
Limewire that I cannot view. They're all copies of the HBO series
Carnivale, and all are of the 2nd season's first episode. For some
reason, people started uploading in a bizarre format I've never seen
before...the filenames all contained jibberish like
HDTV-LOL.xvid.loki.pyro.blahblahblah.
When I tried to view them in windows media player 9 (I'm using
win2k so I can't use WMP 10), all I saw was an extremely garbled view
of a portion of my desktop in the media player window! The player also
listed the length of each file as 0 minutes and 0 seconds. The file
sizes are
anywhere from 222MB to 350MB.
I did a little research, updated my Divx drivers, installed the
Xvid codec, succesfully played the Xvid test movie, and tried again.
Same result...a garbled partial screen capture of my desktop popped up
in my WMP screen. The Divx player would not play the file either...it
popped up a message saying that this is a different format and I would
probably need to download a different codec to view it (which I have
already done).
I tried installing FFDshow. The view in my WMP window changed
from my desktop to blank. The player still listed a file length of 0
minutes and 0 seconds and would not play. FFDshow got uninstalled.
After uninstallation the player went back to showing me my butchered
desktop view.
My last effort was to install the GSpot codec finder. I loaded
all of the AVI files into it and GSpot told me the same thing each
time: The files are valid and playable, and I have all of the codecs
needed to play the AVIs properly. And yet, I can't get them to play.
Has anybody out there heard of something like this happening to
somebody else?? Does anybody have troubleshooting tips I should try
out? Help!

Hi,
First off, ditch Windows Media Player 9 and go for BSPlayer or VLC.
They are far more understanding with corrupt files.
Next, check with GSpot that you have the necessary audio filter (yes!),
your problem sounds like a bad or missing audio codec, probably
AC3filter. This can also explain your "0 length" problem.
Re-install ffdshow and check the codec settings (Start -> ffdshow ->
Configuration) . For each format you can choose between the ffdshow
filter, or "disabled" to force the use of other codecs etc. It will
even show which ones are broken.
In BSPlayer you can right-click on the video screen , choose
Options->Filters and see which codecs are actually being used, you can
then click on one of the codecs to configure it.
Does your graphics card have a TV-Out ? If so, try turning it off.
Older Nvidia cards/drivers would show blank on the computer while
outputting to the TV..
Finally in the options section of BSPlayer or VLC try different
overlay settings for video rendering.
A good source for tested high quality versions of series like Carnivale
is http://www.the-realworld.de/

Just tried VLC for no reason really, but glad I did. Amazed to see how much
less cpu it uses under XP on my Tosh 1.6 Centrino notebook.
Viewing an xvid and then a divx from HD a few minutes ago, zoomplayer
fluctuated between about 20 and 55% cpu - usually at the higher end - as did
classic media player. That's been their usual behavior on this box. But now I
see that VLC uses between 1 and 15% on the very same movies, usually at the
lower end around 2%.
Just tried all three on an mpegII .vro file from dvd-ram. PQ the same on all
three. CMP and ZP around 50 to 60% cpu, steady. VLC got 8% peaks, but stayed
mostly at 1 and 2% cpu. Whatever the reason - better buffering perhaps - it's
Invaluable on a notebook.
Thanks for the tip, Clive. Battery's damned grateful too. Nex |

Just tried vlc (both mpg and avi) on my main system (p4 w/ht 1g 3200 ddr) and
same general results. The overall cpu values are lower of course, and the
proportions are less extreme, but vlc still wins out by a margin of a little
over 2 to 1. Nex |

1. Try an other Player like Video Lan Client
http://www.videolan.org
2. Install the Codecs for this
3. Try GSPOT for finding Information about AVI Version
Google this
4. If there is now way - Try to rename the Files (Backup befor)
Greetings
