Isn't this an argument for shooting filmed TV shows at 30 fps instead
of 24? (I can picture producers saying, "Oh, of COURSE we want to spend
25% more on film stock ...")

At least one has been: MAX HEADROOM which, as a result had a strange but
appealing combo film/video look. I would think others have been as well.

The ideal situation would be to put the CinemaScope disc in one
player
and Todd-AO disc in another player and then switch between them.
I did this with the CinemaScope LaserDisc version and the Todd-AO DVD
version.

Childish suggestion ;-)

This is the way to go:

"Oklahoma!" in Todd-AO on the curved screen in Screen #1
"Oklahoma!" in CinemaScope on the flat screen in Screen #2

-, and you can run from screen to screen to see and hear the
difference.

I actually prefer the Laserdisc(Todd AO version) to the DVD. It looks
better to me and thats with the LD player going thru a composite video
and the DVD going thru the component.

I feel the same can be said of Fox's laser disc and DVD of "South
Pacific".

The leads will be digitally replaced by Mandy Moore and Justin Timberlake.

So if I order a LD, I'll get the Todd AO version, and if I order a DvD, I'll
get the other version?

My fiance and I recently watched it. It's not a bad production but I still
liked the Todd AO version better. Hugh was good as Curly but I didn't
really care for the actors playing Laurie and Judd Fry.

Can't wait for the new transfer of the original. I hope a new print goes
into circulation as well.

The recent production of Oklahoma (starring a pre X-Men Hugh Jackman) is
pretty stunning and is available on DVD. See:

The same production is touring the US.

The last LD version was produced from the Todd-AO transfer. It sold a
lot more copies than the previous CinemaScope version so if you find any
LD copies in existence, chances are it'll be the Todd-AO. The DVD is
also the Todd-AO version but it's a crappy authoring job. It suffers
from excessive digital compression, straight letterboxing without being
anamorphic, and the titles play like a slide show, which everyone who's
seen both the LD and DVD find really annoying. The sound is fine, though
it defaults to matrix stereo instead of 5.1 digital, an annoyance found
on way too many DVDs.

Don't know if it has been covered or not, but I think you can tell the
TODD-AO version from the 'scope version by the cover. The Todd -ao has a
waist shot of Curly and Laurie on the cover and the scope version, if I
remember, has Curly on a horse in the corn field. There was a difference in
the cover. I'm speaking of the the LD version.

So I can't assume that a LD is Todd-AO and order it, I need to read the
small print (which isn't always available on the internet).

That might be enough information to order it. Thanks.

The dVD is the Todd aO version. the first lasrdisc widescreen version was
the Cinemascope.

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but is there an easy
way of getting both the Todd-AO and CinemaScope versions of OKLAHOMA!
on home video? Years ago, I passed up a chance to buy a laserdisc of
the Todd-AO version and I've been quietly kicking myself ever since.
(Which version is the latest DVD release?)

Yes, but it was not shot in a large negative film format. By the unwritten

bylaws of RAMT, it's therefore not worthy of existence. :-)
