Recording multiple DTV channels |
|
|
I have 6 VCRs, one upstairs and 5 on the main floor. The most
expensive one only cost $110. The reason I have so many is because I
sometimes have to record 5 channels at once (I have to keep one VCR
free for playback.*) Of course, this is a strictly analog setup using
the cable input as a source.
My question is: How will I go about accomplishing this job when
digital TV arrives and the analog channels no longer exist? A DTV
tuner can be added to an analog VCR, but then you can't program the
channel. What will be the generally accepted method of programming
and recording 5 digital channels at once?
Thanks,
Norm Strong
*No, we almost never watch everything recorded. We just don't know
ahead of time which programs we're going to want to see.

Three DirecTV DVRs will record 6 digital channels at the same time.
You need no more than 3 VCRs for the ability to copy desired
programs to video tape from 3 DirecTV DVRs.
A few broadcast stations have already converted to digital only transmissions.
The DirecTV DVR will record them where DirecTV carries those channels. |

Analog channels are not going away soon. The original deadline for
the year 2006 has been pushed back; you have more than five years
to find an answer.

I've got four at once (http://www.inwap.com/tivo/SmithTV2004.gif).
One TiVo records two digital channels (two DirecTV, two OTA, or
one of each) in SD or HD, the other two are old DirecTV receivers
connected to old standalone TiVos. By adding an 8-way multiswitch,
I could go up to four DirecTiVos (or three DirecTiVos and keeping
the two single-input standalones).
I recommend saving up your money to purchase a widescreen HDTV
and an HD TiVo.
