Snapstream BTV Bitch Fest |
|
|
I admit it. I love my TiVo boxes. They do exactly what they are supposed
to do with almost no hassle. The other day, one of them had to be rebooted,
but I think that was the first time in over 30 box-months of viewing.
Now Snapstream's Beyond TV is another matter entirely. I am sure they are
good and talented people, but the simple fact is that their software has to
run on a variety of Microsoft operating systems and on a wide range of
hardware configurations. I am not surprised that it is less reliable, more
bug-filled, and and basically a bigger headache than TiVo.
I tried to record something last night on BTV because my two TiVo boxes were
otherwise engaged. When I checked on the recording, it had frozen about
two-thirds of the way through, and I had to power off the box. Luckily, it
wasn't something that I really cared about, and in general that is all I
used the BTV scheduled recording function for, things I don't really care
about BECAUSE IT IS SO UNRELIABLE. With TiVo, I have over a 99% success
ratio, and if there is a problem, it is usually because the guide data is
wrong.
Now that there are DVD recorders with TiVo functionality, I don't see any
reason to build your own PVR since you can get to the digital recordings
directly, unless you are super concerned about privacy and enjoy spending
hours of your time debugging software and using a MUCH inferior remote
control.
BTW, I upgraded to BTV 3.5 thinking that would help. It has been nothing
but trouble, and I had to downgrade back to 3.4. Compare this with the zero
work involved with every TiVo upgrade.

Download SageTV and give it a try, it has some querks too but the uptime
on my machine is 4 months of about 8 hours a day of recording plus
playing all types of downloaded video files, it has never missed a
recording except when the TV schedule from the provider was incorrect
and it works more like a Tivo in that it is always recording what you
are watching even as you flip channels back and forth. I'm also playing
with GBPVR but I could never get it to change channels on my satelite
box so it's only good to me for cable.

Chris... Im curious as to what type of "monitor" you
watch your PVR output on.
Do you use nothing but computer monitors? Or do you
have some standard TVs as well?
If yes on the standard TVs.... what band and model and
size? |

I have an old Magnasonic 25" TV hooked up via composite out on the ATI
9200SE card, I hope to get a 32" with s-video input someday, but money
keeps getting spend on other things :) I have a PVR-350, although the
picture from the TV out on this card is superior to the ATI card, I
don't use it much lately because I watch a lot of downloaded Divx video
which won't play on it and I'm too lazy to switch the cable between the
two cards anymore :).

Thanks for the suggestion, but I will probably stick with the devil I know.
Maybe when they release 3.51 it will be more stable.
BTW, I see that you don't want Google to archive your posts. Do you mind me

Do what I do:
1. Create an email address used only for posting. If I start getting
too much SPAM I delete it and create a new one.
2. Add a little obfusction so humans can cope, but harvesting scripts
don't do so well.
:-)
I actually have different posting addresses depending on the news
hierarchy I'm posting to - easy enough to do using trn and Pnews on
UNIX.

I figure if mail bouncing because you didn't notice that little tweak in
their address annoys people half as much as it does me then I'm not
going to do it to them. I have filters taking care of most spam, it's
almost comical the amount that comes in these days. I used to actively
report it but now I just let it die in the trash bin, never having been
seen by human eyes :)
