Dish Network DVR 522 Sucks! |
|
|
Trust me. Don't make the mistake I did and assume that Dish Network has
their shit together. Go with DirectTV/Tivo combo.
I researched this whole decision to death: Cable vs Dish vs DirectTV
I chose DishNetwork through SBC because I got a break of about $5 a month
over what I would get with DirectTV.
The basic system (reception, live TV) works fine. However, the DVR in the
522 unit SUCKS.
It worked fine until it filled up and I deleted some content...now with
every playback from a recorded content, it streaks, has color-barring, and
video/audio synch issues.
Yeah, I could get a new box...but even Dish Network told me it is a systemic
problem with these machines. They claim to be working on a patch but I'm
not holding my breath.

Amen.
Dish has a little more work to do before their DVR service can be considered
a real (functional) threat to DirecTivo. The recording timers are pretty
weak too. And their basic programming packages are kind of a rip.
I still only wish DTV would make these USB ports do SOMETHING out of the box
on the Series 2 models.

Interesting to find this thread.
I got so fed up with this very same issue, I called the Echostar corporate
number and asked for someone in software engineering for the 522. I left a
voice message (a nice one) for a senior manager and gave my number.
To my surprise, a technician on the development team called me back and
explained that they are about to issue a patch for the 522 that will bring
the rev level of the software to L206 (from L205). he said that this patch
was purely a maintenance release and that their testing had solved the
issues that I've been experiencing with content recorded to my DVR 522.
Said that it had something to do with the interaction of the CPU and the
Drivers for the Box. Said that their senior execs had been riding this
issue with a business partner until it got fixed. Said that the patch would
be made available to every customer on the Dish system by 10/26/2004.
If anyone has the DVR 522, you should wake up on 10/27/2004 and check your
system info and the software version should read L206...and that this is
supposed to fix it.
They also said that the USB port on the back of the 522 would not be WiFi
ready anytime soon as they have too many security concerns with someone
getting into their system and re-tasking their satellites. On the current
model with phone line, the phone company is liable for the security policy
of who rides the lines.
I'm waiting for this L206 update with baited breath.

Unless you've been sucking on fish, it's 'bated breath'.
from http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=bated
Usage Note: The word baited is sometimes incorrectly substituted for the
etymologically correct but unfamiliar word bated ("abated; suspended") in
the expression bated breath. |

I should have added that they said that they would be doing 50,000 customers
a night over the next few nights starting the night of the 21st...and that
this would only be going to those users who have the 522 not all DishNetwork
customers.
It will be what it will be when the patch arrives and then we can all decide
to stay or go.

Re: Dish Network DVR 522 Sucks! |

Interesting that you should say that.
When I got the 522, at the same time, I also purchased the Pioneer 810-H
Tivo DVD Recorder.
I wasn't expecting the 522 when I ordered Dish. I was expecting just a
satellite tuner. I was able to get the 522 to work with the Pioneer 810-H.
And I found the user interface on the 522 to be MUCH easier than the Tivo
box.
I returned the 810-H and bought a standalone DVD Recorder.
This combo, the 522 (with built in DVR and built in Satellite tuner) coupled
with the standalone DVD Recorder, works great...With the expection of the
playback problems on recorded DVR 522 content.
Once that is fixed, I'll be a proud user of the anti-Tivo.
:-)

Dish Network issued a patch over their network that has fixed the problems
with the 522 DVR.
The problems were, upon DVR content playback: color fading, audio/video
synch problems, audio popping.
This patch, "L206", fixed it on my machine

So have I - and while it may be theoretically possible, I doubt it is
at all probable that the satellite set top box has any ability to
retask the birds! That's ludicrous. If it were that easy to do
someone would've used a hacked box to do it by now, just because.
