So have I - and while it may be theoretically possible, I doubt it is
at all probable that the satellite set top box has any ability to
retask the birds! That's ludicrous. If it were that easy to do
someone would've used a hacked box to do it by now, just because.

I just can't believe the level of incompetence it would take to make it
possible. Let's see. How about if we put our mission control system on the
same network as that which connects to the outside world... Yeah, that
makes sense. Never know when the CEO may want to make an orbit correction
from home using the DiSH Home channel 100.
I very much doubt you can get to the control systems from outside the
"control center". It's not like the mission operators work from home when
it's their shift to monitor the birds.

They also said that the USB port on the back of the 522 would not be WiFi
ready anytime soon as they have too many security concerns with someone
getting into their system and re-tasking their satellites.

Receiving satellite signals without paying for it (stealing): Very possible.
Having a set-top box infiltrate a satellite (changing its orbit or
reconfiguring its transmitters): Absolutely and totally unbelievable.

Sounds like the Dishplayer of yesteryear.I do not trust nor have any Dish
pvr equipment.I threw my 3 Dishplayers away, than cursing another person with
them.I went DirectTivo...no regrets.

their shit together. Go with DirectTV/Tivo combo.
I researched this whole decision to death: Cable vs Dish vs DirectTV
I chose DishNetwork through SBC because I got a break of about $5 a month
over what I would get with DirectTV.
The basic system (reception, live TV) works fine. However, the DVR in the
522 unit SUCKS.
It worked fine until it filled up and I deleted some content...now with
every playback from a recorded content, it streaks, has color-barring, and
video/audio synch issues.
Yeah, I could get a new box...but even Dish Network told me it is a
systemic
problem with these machines. They claim to be working on a patch but I'm
not holding my breath.
