I agree with you. My biggest frustration is that I cannot watch the movies I
recorded on my laptop and main home computer (both linux) because of the
encryption they put in them. I don't want to share them or do anything
illegal but I want the free to watch the dang movies I recorded at my
leisure.

If you have any Windows box ripping the MPEG our of the .TiVo file is
trivial. You can do that and then watch the MPEG on Linux.

ReplayTV had this on the 4000/4500/5000 series units. Functionality
varied from near 100% to worthless. It really depends on the show.
And, Randy, the 'start commercial' signal isn't used, it isn't always
there in the signal that reaches the end user. This stuff is pretty
much always based on black frames.

Ok, I don't remember where I absorbed that information from, maybe back
in the dark VCR days.

They want to break your TV, especially your TIVO and if this bill goes
through, you might not even be able to videotape shows because of the
crap congress would put on your TV. Who is for this? Almost nobody
except about 12 multinational companies who own TV programs, and want
to make you pay whenever you watch them.

Ughh, they're going to keep resurrecting it until they manage to sneak
it in. They'll sneak it into some bill that nobody notices or is too
popular to vote against. If the Pres. wasn't so Business friendly
there would be some hope that it could be line-itemed vetoed, but I
don't see that happening.

Wait a minute: If you have a digital to analog converter box attached to
your TV and all signals are routed through it,it will not matter if you
do not or cannot record a "straight" digital signal.Supposedly, these
converter boxes will be available when the analog cut-off occurs
sometime around 2009 (tentative date).
Of course, the recording will not be the highest quality, but some people
who just record for only time-shifting purposes like myself have an
attitude of 'who cares?' Only people who archive programs will this
matter much.

version......I would not count on it if you have a REALLY old 'series1'
type.

Actually I'd say you will never see new features on the old 'Series1'
HW - be it DirecTiVo or standalone. They no longer develop the
codebase for that platform at all. Since they've changed the code and
the development tools since then, I don't know if they could even
compile the new stuff for those units.
