Series 2 Standalone units (not DirecTV) have the option to use a wireless
(802.11) adapter to connect to the Internet.

DirecTV units, like what you have, cannot. They get their guide data from
the satellite, and even some of the updates. Most of the software updates,
though, come through the phone line, from what I understand.

Mine has the connection for the phone line and two USB connectors.

The USB ports are for "future use"... they aren't active.

Thanks for the reply. "Future use". That often means the future may never
arrive. Anyway thanks.

No, this is not correct. People can tell it to connect through the USB
connector, which can be hooked to a USB<>WiFi adaptor.

But it's not like it connects through a wireless connection out of the box
with nothing extra.

You could *possibly* (i.e. this might not work) do a Tivo upgrade to
a bigger hard drive, which would leave the programs intact.

This would require you to get a new OS image (since it sounds like the
OS is hosed on your existing drive). I think I've seen other say that
weaknees.com can legally sell images?? Other than that, there's no legal
way to get a new image.

This would be a lot of work especially if you're not a low level hacker.

(I definitely would try all means to save my tons of recorded programming!)

Really? I thought the warranty covered the physical unit. If they
replace the unit, they better replace the warranty.

Otherwise, you're telling me if we get the replacement, it's essentially
got a 3 week warranty? That's ridiculous. Especially since it was Tivo's
fault that the original unit died in the first place.

From date of purchase. It is like this on just about any product. The
alternative is you send the machine to them and wait, with nothing to use,
while they fix it.

Usually repairs/replacements have a 30 day warranty on the
repair/replacement. I don't know in this case.

What I could really use is a function that automatically skips past
any channel with "Paid Programming" as the show title.

Better yet, how about using the thumb ratings? You could tell the Tivo to
only stop on channels that are showing something you've given "1 thumbs up or
better" for instance. Settings would go from off, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3.

Of course this could get wackier, in all sorts of ways...

Why not have button called "Tivo chooses live TV" where the Tivo uses its
database to see which show(s) it thinks you'd want to watch right now?

Or, why not add a Google search engine to Tivo, let you type in a keyword or
two, and click "I feel lucky!" to see what it comes up with from what's
showing right now? LOL.

If you have it networked, you don't need the phone line for the TV Guide!

Just got my SDH-400 ($219 as a refurb), and love it. I'd rather not
hook it up to a phoneline to use the free TiVo Basic service,
especially since I have a Wi-Fi network already in my house. I'm
looking for a dirt-cheap USB Wi-Fi adapter, and noted that the Belkin
F5D6051 is on sale for $10 after rebate at CompUSA this week. Does
anyone know whether it's compatible with the SDH-400? Is there a
listing of the currently-compatible USB Wi-fi adapters somewhere?
Thanks. {Jonathan}

You're not stuck at all. A repeating manual recording for which ever time
slot you want will free up the other time slot completely so that you can
record other programs. So what that you may have to occasionally check the
to do list to make sure everthing is scheduled properly. It's not as if you
have to stop cross examining a witness and ask the judge for a recess so
that you can do it 'cuz you already have your butt in a recliner in front of
the tv often enough anyway. That's just the way it is.

Here are the words:
All products, including replacement products, are covered only for the original warranty period.
When the warranty on the original product expires, the warranty on the replacement product also expires.

see http://www.tivo.com/2.6.1.3.asp?

Do you have DirecTivo? I suspect it's a function of a glitch in the
program descriptions they've uploaded.

I have a Series 2 SA, and I have an option to get a season pass for
"Take My Kids Please."

I still do not have one, however, for the "EPL Review Show" on Fox
Sports World (which is not listed as a "series, special" as one other
poster suggested).

FYI. 3.1.1e did crash tonight. 1 time. It was recoverable by going to the
standby mode, and just hitting the DirecTV button to turn the unit back on.

I'm fairly clueless, because this time, unlike the previous times, I could
not duplicate the failure.

Hopefully, my wife will be able to watch her shows tomorrow :)

Because standby is basically useless, there's no reason to have a button for
it on the remote.

My reciever and amplifier are source-auto-sensing. The standby mode
stops the audio & video out, thus allowing the receiver and amp to
shut down. It would be REALLY nice to have this button on the remote.
