Compressing Avi`s ??? |
|
|
I have several films downloaded off WinMX in avi format...about 700meg+.
When i try to write the avi`s down to DVD they are reported as being a bit
too large.......
Is there any way to compress these avi files to fit ??.
I`ve tried searching the web with no joy!!!.
Thanks.
Lee.

AVI files are already compressed. You can't compress them any further.
You **could** re-encode them at a lower video bit rate ... sort of a lossy
compression.
If the video quality is **excellent** to begin with, then you could
re-encode at a lower bit rate, and sacrifice some quality, while still
ending up with a good, watchable video.
But if the video is no better than **okay**, then reducing the bit rate may
result in video quality that's so poor that you won't tolerate it.
Virtual Dub will do the trick for what you're asking. You'll need to have
the proper codec to read the video (if you can play the video as is, then
you already have the codec). You'll also need an encoding codec to re-encode
the video. (This may be a different codec than the one used for playback.)
I'd recommend encoding with DivX or Xvid. Just do a Google to find them.
