Converting Divx / Xbid audio from VBR to CBR |
|
|
Hi,
Is it possible to re-encode a Divx / Xvid file with VBR audio to CBR audio?
I think this may cure the 'stutter' I'm getting when I play Xvid files on
my Divx player. I've looked throught the options on VirtualDubMod but can't
see anything obvious, I'd like the video to remain exactly the same if
possible, is this easily achievable or just wishful thinking on my part?
TIA, Jase.

Note: if you have more than one physical drive, spread these
parts around some.
With your AVI file opened in VDub,
Audio - full processing,
then File - Save WAV
After that step,
Audio - No Audio,
then Video - Direct Stream Copy,
then File - Save as AVI
You now have the streams split and the Audio is a WAV file.
File - Close Video File
File - Open Video File (select the video that has no audio)
Audio - WAV Audio (select the WAV file you created)
Audio - Compression (select the codec and the kbps/kHz options)
Note: I'd select the next lower CBR to the (VBR) average rate of
the original - but try it any way you like it.
If there is a loudness problem too, Audio - Volume (enable and
slide)
After making the Volume selection you can listen to the output
with the second Play button - make further changes until
satisfied.
Finally, File - Save as AVI (don't over-write your source file
;-0)

Why Save the original Video file without audio thou, it does'nt make any
sense?
What I do is to extract the Audio - it only extracts the audio stream in the
original format, and names it .wav.
If you need to normalise the audio look at Nero's Wave editor - if you have
Nero.
I've often needed to convert the compressed audio stream back to PCM Wave
thou, this can either be done in Nero Wave Editor or WinAmp.
Then re-compress the audio when re-muxing it back in VirtualDub. |

Whatever works for you. I'm in the habit. Perhaps because of
assembling audio from different versions of the same film at
some times, perhaps just extra suspenders for my belt ;-0)

If you select: Audio - Full processing mode, before saving as
WAV, it will be a WAV when it's done. Selecting Audio - Direct
stream copy, merely demuxes (which is great for AC3 sources).
VDub: Options - Preferences - Main - File options
Untick the "Automatically add extensions ..." it's not really
as clever as it sounds ;-0) With this unticked, you always
provide the extension. With it ticked, VDub will provide an
extension UNLESS you do.

I'm not sure whether VDub "normalizes" the audio, it does
amplify it tho!!
While I do not use this option for most conversions, there are
many sources that do not have enough volume to drive the
speakers on my laptop. When not using headphones, the extra
volume is very helpful.
BTW, VDub takes virtually no extra time (when full processing
audio) to alter the volume.

Correct.

Thanks - I'll remember that. |
