what is status of xvid really? |

I'm interested in writing a frontend for Xvid
for my own purposes.
But I went to the Xvid.org website and noticed that
1. the Xvid API is very poorly documented
2. the forum doesn't allow new users.
I surmised that something is wrong there,
not of a technical nature, and I am wondering if
perhaps what has happened is that the people developing
Xvid were hired by the Divx company (or some other media
company) and are now unable to make improvements to Xvid
due to nondisclosure agreeements etc.
Could that be it then, that private industry
has effectively shut down Xvid improvements in this way?
