DVP-642 and Divx - Finding out if a file will play beforehan |
|
|
Does anyone know of a way to tell if a divx file will
absolutely play on this machine? I have 5 divx files.
When I look at them using AVICodec and/or GSpot, they
have basically the same encoding. However, only one
actually works. Of the other 4, 2 have stuttering sound
and 2 have very, very pixilated video - to the point
of being unwatchable. I have included the output from
GSpot. Any suggestions on how to tell beforehand would
be appreciated. Also, all the files play perfectly fine
on my PC.

As these files all play well on the PC, what's the differences
in your monitor/TV displays?
I note that they are all VBR audio, try converting one of the
problematic MP3s to CBR and retesting.
I don't see the frame rate mentioned? Are they all the same and
compatible with your local frame rate? For example 25 to 23.976
or 29.97 can have a stuttering appearance. I assume the same
may be true in the other direction, but don't have that problem
myself.
The DVP642 certainly plays Xvid, but it play neither all Xvid
nor all Divx that one might find on the net and the ways in
which it fails to do so vary widely.
Don't overlook media as a contributor to the problem. If the
player has to reread segments of the file you will see a stutter
or freeze. If it has to discard chunks of the data, pixilation
most assuredly can occur.

Thanks for the response. I have re-encoded the audio on
one of the stuttering files and it fixed it. One of the
bad video files is 25fps and the other is 23.97fps. The
one that definitely works is 23.97fps. My system is NTSC.
I also tried to re-burn some of the problem files and
it was a no go.
The main thing I am looking for is something that will tell
me "Yes, this file will play" or "No, you need to re-encode"
before I actually burn the files. Maybe I am just dreaming.

And having nightmares, I'd say ;-0)
Downloaded AVI files are hit and miss at best as far as the
present state of stand-alone MPEG4-ISO savvy players is
concerned. The 25 fps files may or may not play well in the
642.
Personally, while I have a couple of these players, I'm moving
more and more toward dedicating one of the PCs to TV and
projection. The interface I'm using is one of these -
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TV_video_adapter.html
and it has never failed, in several years, to produce an
excellent picture on a 1024x768 NTSC TV. Presently, I only use
the device to send 642 unplayable files to the TV.
Also, using this sort of device or a TV-out graphics card, makes
the other PCs in other rooms better media devices as they are on
a wireless LAN and only the server need house video files. And
since I was able, recently, to test the new Moonlight H264
encoder and play the result on TV, it also means that I've a
better chance of keeping up with some of the coming changes
without needing yet another stand-alone player. With a better
program to capture TV per e-schedules, the H-250 capture cards I
use would completely obsolete the TiVo - hopefully that's not
too far away either???
I don't think you will find a program (or device) that will
forecast the playability of AVIs on the DVP642. Just use RW
media (added benefit of just adding new files as you
create/obtain them).

I was thinking about doing the same thing with one of my
spare PCs. I just needed a new DVD player and this one
was a bargain - plus the added feature of divx. Maybe
I will get motivated and see if I can't write a program
to predict playability. Heck, who am I kidding. With
two little ones, Doom3, and Half-Life 2, I barely have
time to watch TV :)
Thanks for the info. I may look into that converter.

Try pressing SYSTEM menu button twice.

MPEG4Modifier helps. It will tell you whether or not there are:
Square pixels; GMC; QPel; consecutive B-VOP's; custom quantization
matrices. All of these things can affect playback on the 642. |

Thanks. I just saw something about the system menu thing.
It helps with the bad video, but not with the skipping
sound. Which is good because I would rather redo the
sound than the video.
I will check out MPEG4Modifier and see what it tells me.
