video playback performance on xp sp2 |
|
|
Hi there
I've got a 2.6Ghz Vaio laptop running WinXP, which I use for playing DIVX
videos, among other things.
It worked a treat for about 6 months, then I didn't use it for a couple of
months, and now whenever I try to play a video file there are major playback
problems...seemingly across all video playing software, all of which worked
perfectly before.
Basically, it will play the video without a problem for about 2 minutes,
then the video will start to lag behind the audio, getting progressively
worse for about 2 minutes, and then the video will speed up until it catches
up with the audio. Then it will be in sync for about a minute, then the
process repeats.
I've put an image of the XP performance graph showing the problem here:
http://sinfield.org/vp/videop_ann.jpg
I'm use the FFDshow codec pack, although it was the same with the tsunami
pack, and I've tried the standalone DIVX and XVID codecs, with the same
results. It's not a problem with the encoding of the DIVX's as they worked
before, and I've tried it with other files and the same thing happens. It
can't be a performance thing - 2.6GHz should be plenty, surely. I've been
through and selectively removed active processes, but no change.
The only major change I made to the OS in the period between it working and
not was to install XP Service Pack 2. Could this be the problem? I think
I've ruled out everything else, but surely other people would have had the
same problem?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
K.

For what it's worth, Karl:
With XPHE-SP2 installed on both and the same video (Divx 5.2 @
1300/192 kbps, CBR MP3 audio) playing almost simultaneously on
each for several minutes, Task Manager shows -
2gp4 ~50% CPU and 3.2gp4 ~15% CPU
Neither showed any deviation in the graph of more than a couple
percent +/- during the observation period.
Your graph shows a much higher percentage, what bit rate is your
material?
It could be that, when you installed SP2 the audio codec
priority changed and that your material is VBR audio? But that
is purely a guess ;-0)

144kbps Video, 133kbps audio, apparently.

It is VBR...however you lost me on the audio codec priority bit. How does
one go about changing that?
Mucho appreciation for your input.

To check/alter audio decoder priority in WinXPHE:
Start - Control Panel - System
Hardware tab, Device Manager
- - - - - - OR - - - - - -
Start - All programs - Accessories - Admin tools -
Computer Mgmt - Device Manager
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
then
Sound Video & Game Controllers
Dbl-click Audio Codecs
Properties page
Dbl-click any codec to alter priority or disable/enable.
Notes on your problem:
144kbps is an incredibly low bit rate for video - less than a
palm device might use. Oddly, the Audio portion is almost the
same size as the video portion??
Are you sure of these numbers? What did you use to get them?
It may be that the decoder is going bananas (possibly from
giggling out of control ;-0) that is causing your problem???
Tho apparently you did not have the problem some months ago;
same files - eh?
Just a tad facetiously, BJ |

Hmm - I'll try fiddling around with these. Although there is no audio codec
specified in the AVI info (see below) so I'm not sure what to prioritise...

Oops my bad...video=1039kbps:

Hi Billy Joe
These are the audio codecs on my system:
http://www.sinfield.org/vp/videop_acs.jpg
Is there anything untoward here? Since I don't know what codec is used for
the video, I'm not sure what to adjust. I've tried promoting various items
in the list to top priority, with no perceivable improvement.
Thanks for you help by the way. I'll buy you a pint of bitter if you're ever
in the London area!
