Billy Joe,

I am somewhat new to subtitling. Would you be kind enough to explain
these terms to me ?

Not something I do very often, but I sometimes use Subtitle
Workshop to make text files that play in concert with AVI files
on the LiteOn or Philips stand-alone MPEG4/ISO players.

I've found that SRT type subtitle files play on both devices as
well as in BSPlayer (and probably many others) on the PC.
Opening up the SRT files that I've created, I notice that they
contain only time and text info.

The Subtitle Workshop will also produce other subtitle file
structures, one has the extension SUB. Some downloadable
subtitle files use this extension and I've noticed that the "{"
& "}" characters appear in this type (or another type, memory is
the second thing to go).

Since you mentioned using VDub, I asked if the filter you are
using (filter is another name for plug-in in VDub) takes more
than one type of subtitle file. You might also check your Sub
Station Alpha for various types it produces and thus avoid the
"{" character. Or you might look into Subtitle Workshop, which
I'm pretty sure is donation based?

Since my efforts are toward English language subtitles for
non-English films, I've not had to deal with the special
characters required by other languages. Only jumped in because
I recall seeing the "{" character in one or the other subtitle
text files.

Hope some of my gibberish makes sense.

BJ
