I want to make a short film in very slow motion (say 1:5) without frame
stutter. I have access to pro mini-DV equipment but there is no
fast-record option, yet I have seen plenty of amateur short films (indie
music videos for eg) which use this technique. I presume they either
shoot on 16mm (not a realistic option for me) or is there some
interpolation software which will create intermediate frames to smooth
out the motion?

thanks in advance...

yes, there are many motion plug-ins to get good slo-mo interpolated from the
footage. the effect is only as good as the quality of the incoming footage,
though.

Try looking at Twixtor.

You can of course do morphing with Discreet Combustion's Flex function
or something else, but it's a lot of effort for little reward.

What about shooting on video and then converting it to film? An NTSC
camera can shoot 60 fields per second. If you turn every field into a
frame and then morph between every frame, that's 5:1.

Realistically, they probably shot in 16mm.

Slo-mo is even more expensive than just "film", of course, since more
film is going through the camera.

While software solutions can be quite impressive, they're not magic.
Good luck.

Most certainly. But if you are going to involve film, you have
the option of doing it the tried-and-true way, to "overcrank"
a film camera and then use the frames at the nominal speed.

Yes. IMO the OP should consider shooting JUST the scenes in question
in film.

But if he can't afford it, there you are.

I use Adobe premiere ... just playback at 50% or slower to make a new
video .. can't try it now .. but it works ,, maybe not well enough
for you though ...

I find that AfterEffects slomo is distinctly smoother and better-looking
than Premiere slomo. If I understand correctly, it uses a different
process. I have done it with frame blending and it seems to look pretty
good.

I do it all the time with very good results. The trick? Drop the 60 fps
interlaced mode and shoot only in 30 fps progressive scan mode. Also
called "movie mode" or full frame mode. Also make sure your shutter
speed is around 1/30th or 1/60th of a second. Any quicker, and you'll
get the unwanted strobe effect.

I am looking for a software that will allow me to both zoom and play back at different speeds especially the slower speeds but I need the slow motion to be smooth as I need this for watching video of my son when he is playing, I coach him so I need to see certain parts of his body's movements which is why I need the zoom and I need the slomo to track the development of his motions.
I don't have much money to put out for this so I would like something "free" but if I have to spend money then I would like something cheap. I have a Canon camcorder [ZR65] which I use to record my son's games then I input the video into my pc. I have tried many softwares but I have found none that would give me all the features I need, one may have great slomo but cannot view in fullscreen, the other may have fullscreen but not good slomo, e.t.c. I understand that I will not find a software that has all of my features [zoom, fullscreen and smooth slowmo with mouse manipulation for speed of playback] for free or even for cheap so I will have to give up a feature here and there.
The main thing I would like is to be able to control the speed of the slomo using the mouse to drag the playback slider while keeping the slomo smooth, if anyone can offer any links/advice with this, I will really appreciate it, thanks.
