Which screen? I don't see any link. But the concept

sounds highly improbable.

Agree. Unless "Newman" can provide a reference, sounds
like he is dreaming. The concept doesn't follow any known
laws of physics. Or else something got lost in the explanation.

Sometimes I use a frame (6x6) of very mild diffusion behind the
subject. Like #250 or less. It has to be perfectly flat and you have
keep the light off of it. With some practice it can be a very cool
effect.

Perhaps by "awesome depth of field", Newman means a
REDUCTION in depth of field? In which case diffusion
such as Goyoman suggests would be the answer.

Feeling very clever, I once dropped a 10x frame behind the talent, with
a "single" in it. Neatly dropped the background, over which I had no
lighting control.

If you can keep the edges outta frame, and the DOF down, it's a great
technique.

I know a couple DPs who often stretch a single black net across a
frame behind talent. Drops the light level of the background and
softens it up considerably... if you can get a shallow enough DOF to
not see the net itself, it can be an easy way to make a small chip
camera look nicer. I think Photoflex or some similar company makes
fold up nets (like flexfills) that you can just pop open and clip to
stands, reducing the amount of setup time on it. I'd worry about
wrinkles with that kind of system, though.

You can also do it with white nets, which softens the background but
doesn't do much to bring it down. IMHO it makes the whole room like
kind of hazy, though.
