miniDV player??? |
|
|
Is there such a unit that will accept the miniDV tape for transfer to
the PC, or do I have to use the camcorder to do the transfer?
I feel like I'm missing something incredibly obvious here...<sigh>
TIA

Several companies sell miniDV VCRs. Alas, because of low volume,
(low demand), they cost several times more than a cheap camcorder.
Many people find it cheaper (and more flexible) to just buy annother
cheap DV camcorder which serves dual-purpose of a "feeder" for
your NLE system, and a second camcorder if you wish. |

Check out the JVC HR-DVS3U. It has both DV and S-VHS VCRs in one
unit. I've used one for 5 months without a glitch. My computer with
Windows XP, recognized it through a FireWire capture card and I didn't
even have to install a CD-ROM software program for it (the computer also
automatically recognized the capture card itself, without its CD-ROM
program needing to be used, either). It cost me $750. and may be
cheaper from online dealers at this time. It's the least expensive DV
VCR of which I'm aware and the S-VHS deck works very nicely, as well.
There's a pro version that also plays back DVCam, but costs a few
hundred dollars more and doesn't have the EP mode for S-VHS. This solid
VCR that sits in my stack is so much nicer to use than a camcorder that
needs a power adaptor, constant plugging/unplugging and clutters up my
editing desk.
I also have a little Sony GV-D1000 DV portable VCR ($1,000.) on top
of the stack, but the big JVC is the one I find most convenient to use
for interfacing with the computer.

OR you could go for a Firestore FS-4 for around the same price then capture
straight to Hdd (DTE) and then connect that straight to your PC ready to
edit! NO TAPE TRANSFER NEEDED.
