Hi, also posted this in rec.video.desktop, but no response, apologies if you
have already read this!

I have looked at 2 video converters in our local Costco store. One is an
ADSTech DVD 2.0 for about $99 CDN and the other is made by Plextor, I think
it was a ConvertX PXM402U, this one is about $190.00 CDN.( I could be wrong
on the exact model numbers)

Which one will perform the best?

The objective is to transfer all my old Sony 8 and Hi8 tapes to DVD. They
date back to 1988 and all appear to be in good condition / Quality, but it
sure would be nice to view them on a DVD disk.

Any experience with the above or recommendations would be appreciated,
Thanks, Robin

I have looked at those less expensive ones, but I know the ones I have
seen don't have in/out, which is something that I need for those that
still have VHS machines. Also, SVideo is a must along with composite and
stereo in/out. I purchased (off Ebay for $95 US) Pinnacle MovieBox DV.
It does all the above and came with Studio 8. I use Liquid Edition for
most of my editing.
Canopus also has ADC-100 which does a few things more, including being
able to defeat Macrovision (when you want to transfer copy protected VHS
tapes to DVD).
These products are slightly above the consumer price point, but they work.
Also, one thing about Costco, if you don't like it, bring it back for a
no hassle refund. Try them and see which one you like.
