Hi again!

I'm hoping some kind soul in the group can help me out with a project I'm
doing. Sadly I'm not working on a pro budget (this is, so far, a hobby) -
I can't afford stuff like Combustion, After Effects, etc.

That said, I have a 6-7 second clip that was shot in the winter against a
background of ice sculptures and such, and I would like to add an effect
to make it look like it was snowing fairly heavily.

It does not have to be terribly realistic -- actually, since the clip was
shot on a bright, sunny day, it probably wouldn't be realistic to see
snow anyway -- this is a sight gag. (This is a video about a summer camp
in Canada, and we're playing the video for a camp conference in the southern
US, and this is the opening sequence. We're playing on the "misconception"
about Canada being perpetually cold..)

I found a filter for iMovie that does "snow" but it's awfully fake looking
(as in you can count the pixels that make up each "flake"). If someone
out there has the ability to do snow effects and wouldn't mind running it
through this clip (7 seconds of DV video) I would really appreciate the
help.

Thanks..

Alternately, if someone wants to suggest to me a way to DIY effectively,
I'm all ears.

Thanks.

Boris Red 3GL does a job that's suitable for 'sight gags' (but probably
not for feature films), and the free download is fully functional for 14
days...

Wondertouch particleillusion.

Alternately, you could shake powdered sugar into a glass of water with a black
background behind it, or shake a box of soap flakes in front of black poster
board, slow the clip 50 %, key that into your footage witha luma key effect.

Or, shredded white paper against a black background.

I like those ideas better than digital: damn it, I didn't get into this
field to sit on my ass and type and push a mouse around. <8^(

BUT, I think an aquarium would be a lot more practical than a glass. >;^)

AND, shooting UP through the bottom might be cool too.

Aquariums are one of the things they use for "clud tanks"... pour milk or
tempera paints into clear water, shoot in slo-mo, great storm clouds!

Wow, thanks for all the tips guys. I didn't realize things were still so
commonly low-tech :-)

Actually, they aren't. But it's ust more fun that way. This would

normally be done digitally. BOR-ing.

Wondertouch is a good suggestion.

By the way, I'm getting to this thread very late (busy lately) but if
you haven't found an easy solution yet, at least one of the stock video
libraries that you can dial up and download has a variety of snowfall
clips.

I think it was the Artbeats library. The single clip license was pretty
low, I think $40 or so and all the effects loop.

I used one a couple of years back to create a snowfall outside the
windows effect for a client and they worked really well.

For what it's worth.

Thanks William, I appreciate that. I'll have a look if I can get some time.
Right now getting the actual content is a higher priority than making it snow.
I've only got a few days left before I present this thing...

If you're using Premiere you may want to take a look at the tutorial on this
