Hi,

I have discovered these two low cost plasma HDTVs with web prices around
$2300 or so and would like to hear from owners. Note that these are not
edtv but hdtv. These models may be related as AVS forum thread said LG
made cards for Vizio. Specs are unbelievable... 1024 x 768 pixels,
5000:1 contrast ratio and 60,000 plasma life. I can't seem to locate
these units locally (Milwaukee) to see for myself. Are they really as
good as they seem??

You have to know what is specified, and how is it specified, lol. If you are not an experienced electronic engineer, better to use the simple eyeball test, like it better than other makes or not! Because you have to discount all the tricks behind those monster numbers. How did they measure them? Soon you will realize that higher spec numbers are not better images on the TV screen.

And the most important thing, the warranty! Read the fine prints !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LG is not alone to disclaim pixel errors on your new screen. It totally depends on the man in warranty service whether they will change your lemon or not. How many erroneous pixels shall come up and disturb the joy of your new plasma TV when they willing to exchange it. Seemingly LG is such a producer of plasma who does not trust in its own product quality and puts the burden to the consumer. The 60,000 hrs lifetime spec. is a piece of shit in the light of their fine prints! What can you do? For example, on the contract, that is on your bill make a special statement that in case of a pixel error that can be seen they change the plasma screen unconditionally! By the way, if you threw your money on LG do not cry if the cheaper price gets you.

My wife won a Vizio P42 in a lottery believe it or not... Hooked it
up two days ago to a Humax Tivo I got her for Christmas.

Fairly easy set-up. Like any other LCD or Plasma I've mucked with,
connectors are located rear, bottom, facing down, so you can't see
what the heck you're doing…. Sound is great IMO, and the menu's are
easy to work with.

So far, the picture seems too dark. I've updated the brightness,
which me thinks I shouldn't have to do on a Plasma… But then again,
I'm thinking I may not have cabled components correctly (YPbPr vs
YcbCr…) so I gotta check that out…

Don't have an HD tuner yet, so can't speak to how HD looks on it.
Going to pick up a Comcast HD tuner today and see how that works..

Available at Costco for 2400. I too would like some comments on this.

I purchased the Vizio 42PHDe yesterday at Costco, and easily transported it home in my Honda Pilot (vertically). The picture is supurb, and should get even better once I purchase a DVI-D cable later this week. Like the other readers discovered, the image in the store was only so-so, which I attribute to the feed. Once I set it up at home and hooked it up to my Comcast HDTV receiver, the picture was excellent, even in SD. I needed to tweak some of the settings to get the best picture, and I'm going to use the THX software included in the Star Wars DVD to get an even better picture (I used this on a Philips HDTV I also own, and the THX software helped to substantially improve the picture.).

By the way, the Vizio is like most HDTVs on the market and does not include a HDTV receiver, which you'll need to actually see an HDTV picture. I say this because some of the previous messages indicated that they were going to simply hook up their existing non-HDTV cable service and/or use rabbit ears to get an over-the-air signal, and obviously this won't work without a dedicated receiver.

Also note that you need to buy a decent quality DVI-D cable to get the best picture out of this unit. I believe the Costco unit simply used an S-video cable which is attached to a splitter unit that shares the same signal among ten or so sets. Hence, the image you see in the store doesn't compare to the image you would get at home, once you set it up properly (i.e. HDTV receiver, DVI-D cable, adjust the settings).
