Neil, I provided them as attachments first because I had them readily
available. If you didn't want to download them, simply don't. The subject
line clearly states that there is an attachment. If it were a major
attachment, I would never have even started to attach them. I've never
been forced to download anything I didn't choose to. Perhaps you need a
different news reader that allows you to specify what's relevant to you.
Instead of being so quick to call me a jerk, why not just ask that in the
future, I only provide links? I'm not here to cause problems so I have no
problem complying with that if that's how business is done here. Simple as
that.

That's the way it's done in non-binary news groups, Erich.
Some people have their newsreaders configured to d/l all postings in
subscribed groups so they can read them offline. Those people would
probably be dialup users. Being forced to d/l a 400kb attachment is
not going to make them too happy.

Sorry, but posting binaries in a non-binary group, is a violation of the
netiquette. Top-posting belongs in that category as well.
There are still people around here who pay per megabyte downloaded, and it
is a slap in their face to post binaries here.

If you want to post binaries, there are plenty of alt.binaries.* groups,
where you can post your file, and let us know where to find them. In your
case, you could indeed have posted the links, as the documents are
available online.
Thanks anyway for pointing us to them, as they may answer some questions to
some people :)

I don't agree with the way Neil chose to reply to your post. Far too many
usenet arseholes for my liking nowadays.
However, you should understand that when binaries are posted to non-binary
newsgroups some ISPs will drop them from their server list. Some ISPs still
only support text based newsgroups.
In this day of Wi-fi and 2 Meg DSL it is archaic if you ask me but we
shouldn't ruin it for people with text only access.
Oh look I just top posted.

Specs, the world is bigger than where you live, and where cable is
abundant. Except for Europe, Korea, Japan, a bit of Australia and the USA,
cable/xDSL is not common ground, and imho it would be nice to not shut
others out in the less fortunate parts of the world, in the sharing of
information. So it is something which I still worry about (but I get less
and less understanding in this).

No, they aren't attachments. They are 400k-4meg *postings* which are
not filterable because they come down the wire just as any message.
Luckily for me I've got broadband here. Did you think about the effect
of posting binaries on people on dialup, who have to pay for their
connect time ? No, I didn't think so.
FYI many people (like me) use Free Agent, which is a completely
servicable newsreader, but doesn't offer options for 'filter idiotic
messages of 4 meg'. Maybe it should.
Taking the attiude that people should run a different newsreader
because *you* are too damn stupid to post URLs it just obnoxious and
insulting. It doesn't surprise me that you're american, because this
sort of behavior us what gets your lot in trouble around the world.
Bye - Neil

Yeah, it's a pity this isn't possible with Agent. When you grab new
headers, the amount of lines is grabbed as well, but if you create a filter
for "lines:", the silly thing says that's not possible. A solution for you
would be to install your local NNTP-server, which downloads the messages
again from your ISP, and apply some filter-rules on that one. You would
download your filtered messages from your own NNTP-server again.

Well, I use the widely-despised Outlook Express and it is quite
easy to choose to not even read/open a posting based on any
number of criteria including message size (which I have selected
to display right after the datestamp). |
