Windows Media Player does it. Would that qualify as a "good free dvd
player"??? There may be others out there that have a bazillion features,
but for general viewing of a DVD, it's as good as it needs to be. WMP
version 10 works fine on my machine...and the price was right!

still the same problem, when i try to play a dvd Media Player asks for a
compatibel dvd decoder.
the link offered brings me to the microsoft site where I can choose between
3 dvd players, each of them need to be paid for.

Sorry... You are right. You need a codec that plugs into WMP. Here is a
freeware package that does the job: http://www.cliprex.com/

Note: It appears that the InterVideo package that I had installed on my
system...months ago, left the WMP plug-in behind. That was a surprise to
me. Good luck.

Media Player 9 would have done the job too, but you need to have the
appropriate codecs installed for the file formats you want to play - see
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Nimo_Codec_Pack.htm Only install the
codecs you actually need.

OK, listen up please.

Windows Media player will not play dvds straight out the box, it never
has....

YOu HAVE to have installed a codec set for it to be able to play them. If
you have/had PowerDVD, WinDVD or a few other players installed WMP will use
those codecs, but WMP won;t do it on say a fresh OS install, without having
installed the appropriate dshow filters.

But media player classic will, but it is not the same as WMP....

Media Player Classic does the job perfectly. Easy download, no further
hassle to get codecs etc...

This in contrast with WMP where you still need third party software to get a
dvd running.

thx erratic.
