Let me start of by saying that I'm no expert in niether mac nor video
production. But someone here at work decided to put me in charge of
the morning anouncements(I work at a school). I have a Mac G5 and a
couple of MiniDV cameras.
My question is: What type of equipment do I need in order to produce a
live news broadcast?
I have an existing TV Studio with ancient equipment which include an
audio mixer, a couple of old jvc editing decks(vhs), and a modulator
to feed the broadcast through the cctv system here. Is there any
software available for the mac which can use it's firewire ports and
have it function as a switcher with video out. Or maybe some external
hardware device that can connect to the mac and do this? What would
be my best bet on achiving this... any other suggestions??

There are quite a few external units which will allow this. I saw one
that is GREAT but ran around $400 if I remember correctly. It had a
slew of conversion, editing, and recording features. I saw it at
CompUSA so that may be a good place to start checking out equipment.

I will tell you, though, that if you don't need HIGH quality broadcast
you might look into something very simple such as an ATI video card.
With my ATI card which cost me around $200 I can input and output video
simultaneously. The card I have has RCA, S-Video and Coaxial inputs
and has RCA and S-Video output. You could simply run a video camera
into the card and run out of the card to your video equipment which
should be able to handle RCA even if it is ancient.

That would provide you with a live broadcast using your system but I'm
wondering why you need to use your computer at all if you're doing a
live feed. Can't you just run a video camera straight into the video
equipment?

Currently I don't have any other working video equipment other than
what is listed above. Which means I definately have to spend some
money. I figure the mac is pretty powerful so maybe I can get by with
just some software, which should be less expensive than buying all new
studio eq.

I have an ATI Card that I can put in the mac, but what software would
I use to do the switching between cameras? Also if I have some
prerecorded footage already on the harddrive I would like to include
that in a broadcast. I know that AVID makes some software, but is
that what I would need? If so which one, they have a bunch of
different titles. I also found one called Vidvox but I could'nt get
it to input two live camera feeds.

I guess the software would have to be able to support:

At least 2 lve DV inputs
An output to either RCA (using a video card) or firewire (the G5 has 3
firewire ports)
Some type of switcher that can fade or transition between the two (or
three the third being prerecorded) sources.

Maybe a titler.
Maybe a green/blue screen effect. (I don't know what this is called)

Again I don't know if this exists at all or maybe it'll require more
than one piece of software/hardware.

Anyways thanks again for your help.
