I have a JVC GR-DVL9800 digital camcorder, about 4 years old. The
image in the viewfinder as well as the screen has begun "chattering"
or strobing rapidly as soon as the camera is powered up, and there's a
clicking that matches the chattering. The chattering is more rapid in
brighter light but is there all the time -- it looks like the shutter
is opening and closing and the autofuocus is also searching.

I had thought it might be a problem with an old battery, but the same
problem is there when the camera is powered by the AC adapter.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? Thanks very much.
