SEDHT amps +Tannoy 12" Red LSU |
|
|
I have through many years built several SEDHT amps with PX4, WE300B, RE604,
AD1 etc.
Due to space problems I exchanged my excellent biamped Altec VOT for a pair
Klipsch RF-7 .
What a mistake!
Now I am looking for some of smaller size that can come up to the Altec's.
I have two Tannoy 12" Red LSU coaxials from the 60's.
And I wonder if it is worth the effort to build enclosures for them. I have
space for Lancaster and York.
Will more modern fullrange/coaxial speakers like Lowther, Fostex etc. sound
better?
As enthusiasts in the Far East pay such high prices for old Tannoys, it is
hard to believe they are of nostalgic value only.
Has anybody in this group ever been able to compare the old Tannoys with
newer units,
or heard about such comparision from reliable sources? (Driven by SEDHT or
other good tube amps)

Hi john,
I have had the opportunity to hear all of the aformentioned units and I
would advise you to forget about Lowther's, Fostex's and such. I am going to
get in trouble here, but I think they sound terrible. The Tannoy's in a
solid cabinet will give you a much more pleasurable sound. I am presently
building my 5 channel surround sound system and I am going to drive 3
concentric Tannoys 3518's (70's ceramic PA speakers) with Luxman MB-3045
amps.
No speaker driver is going to produce that bigger than life Horn Sound you
had with the Altecs. But, I think that if I had a pair of reds' I'd put 'em
to work.
