Hi, I'm curious to find out some insider info about how daytime soaps
are edited. Things I'm interested in learning include...
- kinds of editing jobs on soaps (are they staff or freelance? NYC or
LA? - guess it depends on the show)
- tools/software programs used (AVID, etc.?)
- daily life in the editing room of a major soap
- are they given shots from multiple camera angles and asked to edit
it into a cohesive scene, or is that kind of thing done while the
scene is being taped? (i.e. director is doing the "go to camera one,
close up on Susan Lucci, ok now switch to camera 2..." kind of thing?)
- how the editors got their training and how they got their job

Does anyone know where I can find this information? I'm striking out
doing all kinds of searches online.

Well, I can't answer the technical questions, but I used to act on the Soaps
(General Hospital and Santa Barbara) so I can answer some of your questions:

Quote:

Soaps are switched live and, as I recall, they're not even ISO'd.
Generally, each scene is shot in 3 steps, rehearsal, camera blocking and
tape. In rehearsal the director visualizes his or her shots while blocking
the actors, in camera blocking the camera people rehearse their moves and
tape is, of course, tape. We had the occassional guest director who would
try to break the day down into morning rehearsal and camera blocking,
afternoon dress rehearsal and late afternoon shoot, but these efforts
usually fell apart and later scenes were shot on the fly, with the camera
people trying to follow the actors who went wherever they wanted, and the
director picking the best shot available.

We routinely shot a complete hour show, 50-100 pages, every day, which was
the equivalent of shooting a feature film every two days. There was very
little room for error -- scenes were rarely, if ever, reshot, and the
production folks had it down to an art form, knowing, intuitively, what the
director would want, when the cameras could move, etc.

It was quite an experience.

2..." kind of thing?)

They are done like a live TV show except that they can stop and start when
mistakes are made.

Not much of a part -- D.L. Brock's janitor. For a brief period I was
framing his wife for his murder -- until Ginny confessed. This was a long,
long time ago.

My first steady job in TV was holding cue cards. Among other shows,
I worked on "Y&R" and "Days of Our Lives" while in college in LA.

As Paul told you (Paul, we hardly knew ye...) they are mostly shot as
if live. If the commercial break was 120 seconds, that's exactly how
much time we had to move everything and everyone to the next set,
which could be on the far side of a huge soundstage. Sometimes it
was quite comical watching cameras, boom mics and actors literally
slide into position when the stage manager hit "...three, two..."

The object was to save money and have zero edits, with the finished
show in the can on a single pass of tape. I doubt if too much has
changed since then.

Short anecdote:

The last time I did GH was the day the Challenger space shuttle blew up. I
had a scene that involved, essentially, my starting a riot in a police
station (at this point I don't recall why). We had been given new pages
that morning (which was typical) and we were in the green room running lines
(that's where the bagels were -- ummm, bagels!). There was a TV there that
was on and, of course, when the shuttle exploded it was reported as breaking
news. We were riveted to the TV watching the tragic reports and never quite
got around to learning our lines. When it was time to shoot the riot
scene, no one really knew what they were doing or saying. Somehow, I wound
up surrounded by a group of extras dressed like cops, one of whom got so
carried away with his "acting" in the riot that he slugged me in the face --
a full haymaker that knocked me flat. The network execs happened to be
there that day and immediately ran over to make sure I was okay, and fired
the extra on the spot. I was fine (except for a bruise -- handled by
makeup) and told them not to fire the extra, he was just a kid who got a
little carried away (it turned out it was his first day on a set, ever).

THAT scene we reshot.
