hello!

I would like to convert some .avi file to dvd format. I tried to use
'dvd2svcd' and 'cinema craft encoder' tandem but there is something
wrong... I got two errors: first couldn't save .xml file with setting
and then error with dvdauthor...
can anyone tell me what's wrong or which program should I use to create
a good quality dvd? I have read that CCE gives the best quality.

DVD2SVCD - is that write - DVD source to SVCD destination?

Personally I use TmpGenc DVD Author, it's one of the easiest Authoring
programs to use, and produces quick results, otherwise stick with Ulead
MovieFactory, it's an Encoder/ Authoring program.

yes but you can convert in any direction to any format...

well i should be more precise... the features I need are deinterlacing
(blend mode), cropping (I have to crop source file which is not in
DVD-Video format and then resize to DVD-Video) and the program should
allow to define as many setting for quality as possible and also should
count the bitrate to pack it to any media (DVD+ - or CD). problem is
that not every software has a good deinterlacing module- for ex.
premiere hasn't and virtualdub has.

do programs you listed support these features (I don't know them)?

as you can see it does not have to be the easiest software ever.

The recommended path for authoring video from source to DVD is via:
1) Capture the video as DV Format (In AVI format when on the PC)
2) Edit the video remaining in DV-Avi format.
3) When finished editing encode the video to the final Mpeg2 format
(cropping of the source frame is best of done at this stage) it reduces
quality loss.
4) Without re-encoding - make the DVD Vob file set.

The problem is that many authoring programs like to re-encode the Mpeg2 file
stream if they do not like it's previous format..... As for de-interlacing
required? That process can easily be done in the DV-Avi stage. Just pick
your process required, and the solution taken.

well, this 'manual' is unuseful for me. I got an .avi file already but
it was recorded for analog camcorder not a DV digital... I had to
record it to 584x438 because there are always some distorions on each
borders. now I got my .avi file edited and now it only has to be
deinterlaced, cropped (to 576x432 - 4:3) a little and then converted to
DVD-Video format in as good quality as possible...

Ok - well you can still edit non-DV format Avi's in VirtualDub, but again, I
ask the question WHY CROP in VirtualDub, this involves re-encoding, and
cropping is usually easily done in the encoding process?

Often when I'm re-working DV-Avi's to DVD destination (Interlaced) I just
let the encoder (TmpGenc Plus) worry about cropping & de-interlacing, and
work the interlaced source in VirtualDub (I also normalise the audio in
VirtualDub too - well extract it and then normalise the Wave file). If I'm
encoding to XVid Avi's then I de-interlace, crop & re-size during the encode
process.
