Panasonic Service 100s of Miles Away! |

Hi. I own a Panasonic PV-DV701D Digital Palmcorder. The eye piece
viewfinder has stopped working. Otherwise, the camera works fine. I
just have to view what I'm shooting through the LCD view screen.
I wanted to get it fixed, so I checked Panasonic's web page for service
centers. I'm from Southern New Jersey. The only service centers were
in Illinois, Tennessee and New York. I couldn't believe it.
So now I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a part and try to fix it
myself. Anyone know what part it would be? Otherwise, anyone know of
a Panasonic service center near Cherry Hill, New Jersey? :)

Ever think that it may be better to have only one or two repair sites for such
complex hardware, rather than the days when the major players would allow nearly
every mom and pop shop that owned a soldering gun to call themselves an
'authorized repair center'? |

I'll assume that your response means that I'll need to ship it out for
repairs.
It's an odd business model, though. I would think they'd have at least
a few centers in each state. After all, cars with computer chips and
GPS navigation devices are no less complex, yet there's always a dealer
within reach. With respect to digital video, Canon has a service
center for digital video camcorders within 30 miles distance.
Unfortunately, though, I have a Panasonic, not a Canon. Oh well.
Should have checked out service locations before I purchased. I'll
know for next time.... |

Just looked into the available service centers. They charge a flat
rate of about 230 bucks to fix the camera (includes shipping). Since I
can get a new Sony DCR-HC20 for about 335 (it's actually a slight step
up from my Panasonic PV-DV701D), I figure that's the way to go.
