It depends.

Reusing tapes increases the likelihood of flaking coating and/or stretching
which, in turn, can result in dropout.

Tape is cheap. Why take the risk?

Just a question, where do you buy tape? Tape seems pretty expensive here and
I have to buy around 15-20 tapes for a 3 month long trip I'm going on.

I buy Sony Excellence from www.totalmedia.com. When I travel (which is
fairly often), I run through about 5 hours a week, which translates to 10
tapes for a 2 week trip, 15 for a three week trip. Five tapes run around
$40, with shipping, perhaps a tad less. Compare the cost of the tape with
the cost of the trip, and the cost of the camera and support gear, and it's
a tiny fraction of what I've spent to get where I'm going and to shoot video
once I'm there.

Note, too, that I shoot Excellence, rather than Sony Premium -- the latter
cost about half of the Excellence tape, but I spend more so that I'm assured
I won't have any failures or drop outs (and, indeed, after shooting 100 or
so hours, I've yet to have a single drop out).

My tapes get used exactly twice: once when I shoot and the second time when
I play the tape back for capture to the computer.

In theory, camcorder tapes with metal coating last up to 1000x
re-recording.A much better design than old CrO2 (Chromium dioxide) VHS
tapes.
