I'm using the latest versions of SmartRipper and Dr. Divx to archive
my DVD movies to my hard disk. Everything works fine but i'd like to
be able to do the following:

1) Include the original chapter markers in the DivX avi file so that I
can switch between chapters when using Windows Media Player

2) Include the menu structure in the DivX file (i.e. the DVD menu) so
i can use features like "Chapter Selection".

I assume 1 is possible and 2 is not.

Also, is DivX the right format to be archiving to? All I want to do is
store my DVDs on the hard disk using a reasonable amount of disk space
- if i can get a compression of 50% i'm happy.

thanks,
Will.

1. This can not be done. There is no place in the file structure of an
..avi to implement this. In the case of dvd it is all figured out to
make this possible by setting up a very specific combination of files
with dedicated purposes.

2. See 1.

If you leave DivX and archive to s-vcd (super video cd) you will have
more options regarding menu's. You won't get the compression DivX can
offer. 50% is achievable all the way however.

Well chapter markers are not possible, they are only possible on DVD's since
they are included in the Vob file structure, the closest you can get to
having chapters is to split the DivX Avi into many files separated on the
chapter markers. This can be done fairly easilly, but takes a little longer
than doing it as one DivX file, basically you rip the DVD in stream
proccesing Mode, and only rip one chapter at once..... And compress each rip
individually....

BTW Mpeg2 files also have no ability to contain chapter markers, but look
forward to the possibility of next Gen DVD's, they may support Mpeg4
playback, with chapter markers.
