[Audio functions
of DVD-Video]
15. Karaoke functions with superior sound quality
Because DVD-Video provides a maximum of eight sound streams
and each stream can record up to five AC-3 audio channels, DVD
is an extremely versatile entertainment medium.
For example, depending on the software used, you can sing along
guided by the vocals of the professional singer or sing a duet
with the artist. These and other functions are standardized. The
vocals can be recorded in multiple languages--Japanese, English
or whatever.
With AC-3 5-channel recording, the producer can assign the stereo
accompaniment to the front left and right channels, for example,
and the guide melody to the center channel. For a duet, for instance,
the rear left channel can be utilized for the male vocalist and
the rear right channel for the female vocalist.
If desirable, the producer can substitute guide vocals for the
guide melody.
To enjoy these versatile functions, either a player with karaoke
capabilities or an AC-3 karaoke amplifier is required. With some
players it will be possible to cancel playback of some of the
audio data (vocals).
With the eight sound streams, it is possible to store multiple
versions of the same number, for example, with different instruments,
arrangements or keys. Using the caption highlight function, the
text of the lyrics displayed on the screen is highlighted to help
the user keep pace with the music.
