CHAPTER 7 - The world of DVD-Video -

[Audio functions of DVD-Video]
13. Down Mixing for superior sound in your home

To reproduce Dolby Digital(AC-3) 5.1-channel digital surround sound , it is necessary to connect a Dolby Digital(AC-3) decording unit and amplifier & speaker system to a DVD player's bit-stream terminals (digital audio terminals).

Without this arrangement, when a DVD player is connected to a stereo system or a TV through its analog audio terminals, 5.1-channel sound is down-mixed to 2-channel stereo. Down mixing divides the surround sound without losing any information, thereby achieving high-quality sound.

If the disc is recorded in 5.1-channel surround sound, 4-channel surround sound--consisting of the front three channels and one rear channel--can be achieved by connecting either a Dolby ProLogic decoder or an amplifier with a built-in decoder to the analog audio terminals . So, you can enjoy superior sound with your current audio system.

* Down mixing is possible with MPEG2 Audio, but the details have not been decided yet.
