AnyDVD Released New Version

AnyDVD just released a new version today, there are no big updates though.

• Fix: Stability problems
• Fix: CSS Key Edit Dialog
• Fix: Possible hang of Plextor Writer
• Change: Improved behaviour of RPC1 Drives with Windows 2000 and Windows XP
• Change: Increased Process Priority
• Some minor fixes and improvements
• Added Polish language

Free DVD Recording Tool For Linux?

DVD-Software.info only has Windows DVD software so far. As a Java programmer, I only use Linux for work, it's quite frustrating to use Linux for entertainment at home, either play popular games or copy DVD.

There is a discussion on slashdot.org about DVD tools for Linux, check it out if you are a Linux user.

"cdrecord-ProDVD is OK for burning DVDs but (i) it grumbles pointlessly about device names and (ii) it has a weird binary-only license that expires every six months or so. There are some Free forks off cdrtools - dvd+rw/+r/-r ,dvdrtools and this patch - do any of them make a good replacement?"

DVDx 2.2

Added a new free DVD ripping software - DVDx, it allows you to convert DVD to VCD2.0 , SCVD1.0 or AVI (DivX...) in one step (Including multiplexing, splitting). It produces good quality movies in AVI , MPEG1/2 format and you don't need to have 5GB or more free on your hard disk. DVDx has been designed especialy for inexperienced users, it is a simple and intuitive program.

The DVDx FAQ and complete DVDx Guilde (PDF file) are also available.

DVDx is also a open source software, which means you can download the complete source file and modify it as you want, but you have to be an experienced programmer to do this.

Excellent freeware guide for Windows

OSNews.com has an excellent guide to freeware for Windows-based PCs written by Manish Bonsal. It’s very thorough and offers links to productivity, security, and entertainment applications. If your budget is tight, you know of a student just heading back to school with a brand new laptop or Tablet PC, or you are just plain curious about how good freeware (and donation-ware) can be, this is a great place to find out about some very nice tools.
